Gretchen's House is a locally owned and operated family of seven early learning childcare centers in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with satellite centers in Chelsea, and Houghton. We have been providing child development programs for infants through school-age children since 1985. Our programs are licensed by the state of Michigan and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
Gretchen's House has a partnership with the HighScope Educational Research Foundation. We implement the HighScope curriculum in all of our centers. Our philosophy is centered on the principle that children learn by doing. Our teachers provide engaging, developmentally appropriate activities that encourage children to become confident, competent, life-long learners.

Services
Gretchen's House follows the HighScope curriculum. This philosophy encompasses five areas: environments, adult child interactions, a consistent yet flexible daily routine, active learning experiences, and child observation and assessment. The HighScope approach is based on research that shows that children learn by doing.
We recommend that you begin your search for childcare several months in advance of the desired start date to ensure placement and to prepare for a smooth transition. We prefer for you to tour our center(s), speak with the director to make sure the center has an opening in the program you want before reserving a spot for your child.
Sometimes the word "daycare" evokes images of a place where children primarily pass the time while their parents are at work. At Gretchen's House, we refer to ourselves as child care centers because we are focused on the child, not just getting through the day. Gretchen's House is a place where children develop and thrive!
Our infants and toddlers (ages 3-36 months) are cared for in small groups of 6-12 children. A separate space within this area is set aside for infant care. This accommodates the particular needs of very young babies who spend much of their time eating and sleeping before they become mobile.
Once a child is creeping or walking, there are large spaces for active exploration, areas for messy activities, and small, soft places for quiet reading, singing, pretend play, or one-on-one play with a teacher or friend.Every infant has particular preferences, rituals and routines, but there's one thing they all have in common: a need for consistent, responsive caregivers.

Everyone knows the phrase "Terrible Twos, " but the amount of development that takes place between one and three years of age can better be described as terribly exciting! Our toddler toys and activities encourage children to test, explore, and master new skills and concepts. Classrooms and furnishings account for toddlers' high energy levels and the challenges of sharing materials and space.

Evidence-based approach to supporting child development. It's a big center but feels like home. All the teachers and staff are loving, patient, skilled. I've heard it's a good employer, turnover seems very low- we haven't seen a teacher leave in the almost 3 years we've been there. Both my kids love it.
