As we all know small family owned businesses are the cornerstone of America and symbolize the American dream. Starting on a shoe string budget, Tom Borthwick drove up and down I-5 in search of jewelry store displays at the company called Best, whose locations were going out of business.
Tom Borthwick found used showcases, used jewelry displays, used mirror wall to hold figurines, ring boxes that had Best's logo inside (to save money Tom printed his name using publisher and with double sided tape, taped his logo over the Best logo.)Tom decided the logo should be a side view of a diamond.

Trade Up: We offer trade in on any diamond or gold items. If they were not bought here, we calculate what the trade in value would be. If you bought them we will give you exactly what you paid, including tax towards a new item of at least double the price. Diamond Trade Up: When you buy your diamond at Borthwick, we will apply exactly what you paid including tax toward a bigger diamond of at least twice the size.
Two Jewelers In House: We have two jewelers who both work in the store. With 24 years combined experience your jewelry will be professionally fixed within a few days. Full Service Jewelry Repair: We fix: Rings, Pendants, Chains, Earrings, Gold, Platinum, or Silver, Antiques or Modern Styles, Chains soldered, Watch links adjusted, Ring sizing, Prongs replaced, Tips rebuilt, Shanks replaced, Stones tightened, pearls restrung, and more.
Scrap Gold: We buy scrap gold jewelry that is 8kt, 10kt, 14kt, 18kt, 22kt, or 24kt. When you bring it in, we separate it into the different karats of gold, weigh it and depending on the gold price, we calculate how much per gram you will get. Scrap Silver: We buy scrap sliver jewelry. When you bring it in, we will weigh it and depending on the silver price, calculate your price per gram.
Insurance Company Compliant: All our appraisals are legal documents for insurance companies. We provide two copies with a full description and a picture. One copy for your insurance company and one for yourself. Time frame: These appraisals usually take one business day to complete. We generally like to have the item overnight, however if you bring it in in the morning we can have it done later that day.

Me and my wife purchased our wedding/engagement rings from here and not two months of having my ring the “gold” has worn off to now a silver. After receiving it 3 days late then being asked to pay for an express delivery charge because of their failure to submit the order a few weeks before my wedding. Luckily we received it the day prior thankfully to them eating the freight charge that was originally requested from me. The name Diamond key from a little store to an amazing lay out and selection for any budget!! We have had several repairs and purchased multiple necklace and been very happy. One necklace we bought broke within a week and they took care of us no questions no hesitation.
Watch batteries and watch selections they have the best in town!!
The crew they have working for them, really keeps us coming back!! Kristi is a rock star!!

I brought my engagement ring to be sized down from a 7. The young lady who helped me suggested I try a 6 to make sure. And it was a much better fit than the 6.5 I was going to size to.
The price to size my ring down was much lower than I anticipated. They told me that it usually takes about a week to size my ring. No big deal. They called me back the same exact day that I dropped it off. Not only did my ring fit perfectly, but it was seamless, and they cleaned my engagement ring for me and it sparkled like the 1st day that I got it. I would give this place 10 stars if I could. We'll be going back

I had spotted a gift in the store that I thought my daughter would like but wanted her to see it before I bought it. She met me at the store in her vehicle with her daughter who was asleep in her carseat so we didn't want to disturb her. I went into the store to tell them our situation. Tom came out to assist me and when I explained what had happened and why my daughter was unable to leave her vehicle, he offered to take the whole tray of jewelry out to show her in the parking lot!!!! My Wedding ring was missing a diamond although we did not get this ring from this establishment only because we didn’t know of it I brought my ring to them. I believe my ring was even under warranty at my previous jeweler but I trust this establishment. They were super fast. My ring is perfect. Can’t even tell it had major work done to it. They were affordable and the team is incredible. Since moving here we have only bought and recommended this place to all our friends.

Though the jeweler didn't want to bother with an inexpensive ring my 8 grandkids gave me, with $ they had saved, I really didn't stress how important it was to me. My bad. He did repair a pair of glass frames that couldn't be replaced! For that I am grateful.
He also replaced a few diamonds in a ring. The help was excellent in patience and expertise in helping me pick out gifts for several Christmas gifts last year. I will go back.

I inherited my grandma's diamond ring. I wasn't crazy about the band or setting. Within 10 minutes of entering Borthwick, they showed me exactly what I had in mind. I am so happy with the new design. We went in to get my wife's engagement ring resized and were greeted by a very loud man wearing a gold chain and two giant diamond rings, one of which read "DIAMOND KING". I'm assuming this was the owner.
We inquired about getting her engagement ring sized up to match the wedding band because it was too tight. He asked if we would like to have them joined together and we declined. Sometimes when we travel, it's nice to be able to just wear the band and not look too flashy. He said if we ever wanted to join them, we would need both rings resized again. We declined again

When my husband and I got married we purchased a wedding ring and band from a private individual years ago, I took the ring in to have it appraised for safe purchase, the owner appraised it to be real diamonds and gold. As I was going through my records of insurance I realized I needed to have current appraisals on my rings so last year I went to borthwick to have my wedding ring appraised again, and at that time I found a very expensive diamond band they had and was sold on purchasing it! Was looking for a replacement for the diamond in my wife's wedding ring that was lost several years ago. After looking at a couple of the chain stores in the mall, I wanted to check with Borthwick's, mainly because I live in Ferndale, they are local, and I have heard good things.
The chain stores tried to upsell me, and would have had to order the stone, and send the ring out for setting.

I have taken my wedding ring set in a couple of times to have prongs examined after hearing from the original seller that I had loose stones. The first time, Borthwick said "no, your settings are fine" and polished the ring (all for free); the second time they did find broken prongs and fixed those for a very reasonable price. I also had them rhodium plate my white gold anniversary band, and when I took it back in for the second plating they also plated my platinum wedding ring set so they were both shiny and sparkly (and didn't charge me for the wedding set plating). We were very impressed with the friendliness of the staff as they were all willing to help and give suggestions and advice. Since buying wedding rings isn't something either of us do often we decided to check out a couple of places in the mall as well. Wow what a difference.

I would like to say that Tom and the gang at Borthwick Jewelry in Ferndale are the best jewelers and some of the most honest and friendly people I have ever had the pleasure to know! Once again they have surpassed my expectations of what good customer service can be! I bought my wife an anniversary ring and then took it back in a week later to have some bands put on it! My husband purchased a bracelet for me for Mother's Day from Borthwick. They didn't have exactly what my husband wanted to get for me, so they helped him find one in a catalogue to order. It was absolutely beautiful and I loved it. However, the clasp that it came with didn't work properly. I took it back in and they ordered a new clasp. When I look at the shop when I'm driving out of town, I feel bile rising. The owner clearly took advantage of the fact I didn't know the price of gold per oz when I sold him a 24 carat gold bracelet weighing multiple oz.
