Today, The Neuropsychiatric Institute provides extensive outpatient Behavioral Health Services in the Tampa Bay Area. Our clinical staff is made up of Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Social Workers, and Mental Health Counselors. We use a multidisciplinary team approach to treatment.
In 1970 The Neuropsychiatric Institute (NPI) was founded as the private practice entity of The University of South Florida College of Medicine's Psychiatry Department. This College of Medicine was one of seven new medical schools simultaneously being built in the United States. Psychiatry was the first clinical Department in the School.

Services
Neuropsychiatric Institute provides Behavioral Health Services for Adults, Children and Adolescents. We believe that as long as you have your problems under control, then you do not need Psychiatric assistance. However, if the problems have control of you, then you should seek help. Our approach is an eclectic, common sense approach.
At The Neuropsychiatric Institute, we accept most major insurance plans. In the event that our services are not covered by a health plan, or the patient has no insurance coverage, payment arrangements can be made on a fee-for-service basis. Our staff will verify benefits and communicate with the patient, prior to being seen, concerning any applicable deductibles that are due at the time that services are rendered.
If the patient is a child, please make sure to read the legal requirements of who must bring the child to his/her appointments. Generally speaking, a "psychologist" is a Mental Health Professional who is trained to help individuals better understand themselves and learn why they behave in certain ways, and to help those individuals modify their perceptions and adjust their behaviors to achieve greater happiness and fulfillment.
Patient Consent Form - Consent to use of Electronic Prescription and Consent for Treatment. You should expect to be in our office for about 2 hours for your first appointment. Upon arrival we will collect the completed documents (see below), along with a picture ID and insurance card. Our staff will scan your cards and enter some data from the forms you filled out.
Neuropsychiatric Institute currently has over twenty Mental Health practitioners to serve you. We serve clients from Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee, Pasco, Polk, Sarasota, and Hernando counties, and more. We see patients by appointment only. Appointments can be made over the phone or in person. Psychiatric evaluation appointments are generally available within 2 - 3 months.

I bring a family member to NPI for therapy with Colleen. She has been wonderful, very compassionate and helpful. I was apprehensive about this practice because of the negative reviews but we have had a positive experience with all aspects. When I initially called to schedule they said it would be two months out for a new patient which unfortunately is pretty standard in the area so I accepted. They called back a few days later and offered me a cancellation, moving the appointment up by about 6 weeks which was a pleasant surprise!

I’ve been a patient here for many years and have been seeing Dr. Breiter from the beginning. She’s been awesome to me and very compassionate. I never feel rushed and always feel I’m being heard.
The office staff, in my opinion, have never been rude to me. In fact, they’re very pleasant and seem happy to see me. I think they do the best they can having to deal with, I would imagine, a wide range of personalities and probably some people are not so respectful to them.
Since COVID started, I’ve been really happy with the video appointments. Dr. Breiter always calls on time which I appreciate

I love this place and my therapist. I know there are a lot of negative reviews, but if you want help, you have to be 100% open and honest. I have gone from never leaving my house without anxiety attacks, while on SEVERAL meds. To meds free and living a normal life. From forcing myself to bathe once a week to daily showers and baths. 16 years of psychology assistance, and I am finally seeing progress.

Wish I could give ZERO stars. If it were not for my amazing team Michelle and Susie, I would have left a long time ago. The front desk people in the appointment line are all over the place and stressful. You would think that working in a mental health setting, people would be nicer to you to help you out without adding on problems, but not here. If you leave a voicemail on the appointment line, good luck getting a call back. However, the billing department (primarily Vanessa) has been a great help to recent stress regarding the appointment line. It seems like everyone has their stuff together except

Please, please, please pay attention to the negative reviews for this place. I have never had a more difficult time finding competent psychiatric help than in Florida, and this place is NO exception. Completely impersonal staff, made me wait 2 weeks for a medication refill and then needed duplicate paperwork from me (which they already had), cancelled my appointment and made me wait another 2 weeks for another appointment. You will not be helped here- only treated rudely and impersonally. If you can deal with that for a medication refill, this is your spot.

So far I have had nothing but great experiences with this place. I highly recommend Michelle Saunders. I feel very comfortable with her. She is extremely validating while also challenging unhelpful/unhealthy thought processes.
I also see Susan Roux for medication management. She is very kind and I feel like she genuinely wants what is best for her patients. She doesn't want her patients to be over medicated; she clearly wants to find whatever balance works best for them. She takes the time to listen to what's going on in your life, not just your symptoms, and she kindly suggests topics to discuss
