Phillips Funeral Home was established in 1907. Hayes Downing Phillips became the founder in an era when wagons served as hearses and caskets were handmade by R. R. Riddle of High Falls. His son, Melvin, took over the operation of the funeral home in 1945 and proved to be an asset to the town of Star by managing the business, operating an emergency ambulance service, and giving back to his community through civic affairs.
At New Hope Memorial Gardens we believe that your family memories are precious. That is why we have developed a comfortable environment where you can create a lasting and meaningful memorial to your loved ones. The memorial you select should always be an expression of your love and respect. That is why we provide you with "a freedom of choice" when it comes to selecting your preferred form of memorialization.
Family and friends getting together to honor a loved one's life is one of the most important steps in the grieving and healing process. You may opt to have a traditional religious or military service, or as more and more people are doing, you can choose to have a non-traditional 'life celebration'.
Traditionally, a burial service involves a visitation, followed by a funeral service in a church, or other place of worship. The casket is typically present at both these events, and it is your decision on whether to have the casket open or not. You have the option of having the remains interred (earth burial), or it may be entombed in a crypt inside a mausoleum (above ground burial).
Giving a meaningful, moving eulogy can be a nerve-wracking situation for even the most accomplished public speaker, but it need not be. How can you summarize somebody's life in a few short minutes, while being both somber and funny at the same time? Writing and delivering a eulogy is a therapeutic tool to help deal with your grief, and being chosen to give a eulogy is an honor and should be treated that way.

Pugh Funeral Home is exceptional in dealing w/ families ! Mr Phillips personally placed a rather large UNC @ CHAPEL HILL pom pom for us into the ground by the MCKINNON headstone to honor our father, Dan & the family about four years ago. Very much appreciated. Recently we initiated an upgrade request of our father's foot stone; whereby, Pugh
Funeral Home detailed specifications of our own design.

Very efficient and satisfactory service. But there is a complete lack of communication with ALL family members. It's like the funeral director only communicated with the step mom and forgot about the official children of the deceased. NOT SATISFIED AT ALL. The funeral director planned for the service to happen and take dad back to the funeral home till the ground was dry enough for dad to he placed. After the service the director changed things, and placed dad in the grave while the family was now where around. The vault and liner was riddled with rain. The director stated to the concerned family

We were very impressed that the funeral director provided green blankets that matched the other graveside items. It was a windy day today. Nice comfort for the family. Nice touch!!
