In therapy I generally work with clients to increase their awareness of current thoughts, behaviors and feelings (this is called Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and also Mindfulness Training).
This approach is scientifically validated by numerous research studies, but interestingly, overlaps with many forms of meditation practice. Quite often, though, we human beings can get stuck in certain thought patterns, and are not able to recognize when our thinking can actually be harmful.
