Dr. Robert Shafer PhD is a mature professional psychotherapist/ psychoanalyst with more than 40 years in practice in the Santa Barbara area. He has had extensive experience with a wide variety of clients and presenting problems. His strength rests on his exceptional ability to listen and understand from an empathic perspective.
Couples therapy, or marriage counselling, is designed to help individuals recognize and resolve difficulties occurring in their relationship. Most often, when people first come for help they find themselves polarized around one or more issues which seem to be "the problem". The first step in resolving such issues is a clear empathic understanding on both sides.
As Sigmund Freud famously discovered, our conscious lives are actually shaped by conflicts and feelings that operate outside our awareness. Psychoanalysis is the general name given to methods of therapy which seek to help people better understand their emotional reactions and behavior in the light of the early life experiences which shaped them.
