So what should I expect with the Tax Reform Act that was just pushed through in record time? The Republican's stated objective was tax simplification, but many of the changes are really anything but that. When you are granted Incentive Stock Options (ISOs), there is no tax effect for you. When you exercise the options there is no addition to your regular taxable income.
A. You may be able to have the penalties abated. Whether it is the IRS, the California Franchise Tax Board, or some other state or city that has assessed the penalties, they will often accept your explanation of reasonable cause as justification to remove penalties that have been assessed.
