Snell Family Farm
We are a diverse farm in Southern Maine growing plants, vegetables, flowers, fruit, and ornamentals. You can shop at our farm stand in Buxton or at Portland Farmers' Market. We'd love to be your source for high quality farm products and your connection to Maine's seasons.

Snell Family Farm began in 1926 when Henry Snell (John Snell Jr.'s grandfather) moved to the Buxton farm in search of fresher air for a healthier lifestyle to help him recover from tuberculosis. He and his wife, Ruth, and their six children began raising poultry for meat and egg production, selling the farm products locally in Saco and Biddeford.
Services
We use many organic techniques, including crop rotation, cover cropping, releasing beneficial insects, soil sampling, application of manure and compost, among others. At the same time we do sometimes apply commercial fertilizers if our soil tests indicate a need and sometimes use seed treated with fungicides.
At Snell Family Farm, we're committed to feeding our neighbors, helping folks in Southern Maine eat well with the seasons. We grow a wide array of fruits and vegetables, and are pleased to now offer treats from our commercial kitchen. In addition to shopping at our farm stand, customers can join the harvest with our pick-your-own-apples.
We start the season with potatoes, peas, chard and garlic scapes, followed by cucumbers, beans, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, garlic beets, among others. The most bountiful time for vegetables is late August and early September as summer crops overlap with fall crops such as celeriac, Brussels sprouts, kale and collards, broccoli, cauliflower and many kind of squash.
Snell Farm started as an apple orchard in 1926, and apples are still a big piece of the puzzle today. Our orchard is also home to peach, pear, plum, and tart cherry trees. Raspberries ripen mid-July and are the epitome of summer's richness. Many of our customers capture that richness in jam, pies and winter smoothies made from frozen berries.
We love growing and eating lots of different herbs: curly, classic and pineapple mint; purple and green sage; classic Italian parsley; lemon and English thyme; and of course basil, from Italian to Thai to opal. We have the perfect herbs for lots of projects, whether you're brightening up a cocktail or making your winter's supply of pesto.

We went to Snell farm to pick apples and ended up finding tons of raspberry bushes as well! It was easy and convenient, parked the car, grabbed a wagon and rolled the baby into the orchard. There were several types of apples to choose from, and the trees were packed with huge ripe apples. Great experience for the family.

Choosing Snell was was one of the best and easiest decisions we made for our wedding. Carolyn created our vision exactly as we had imagined, and was incredibly fun to work with. The best part was seeing our flowers when they were babies the spring before our fall wedding. We are grateful for the opportunity to choose a local family business to provide flowers for our big day, one down the road from where one of us grew up. Truly special.
