Prior to founding the firm Joan worked for Westchester Legal Services and as the Managing Attorney of Bronx Legal Services. Joan and Elizabeth founded their firm in 1987 due to their common interest in civil rights litigation, in particular defending the constitutional rights of prisoners and of all people to be free from discrimination based upon their race, sex, age, or sexual orientation.
