From its beginnings, The RAM Companies set itself apart from the crowd, with vision, creativity and a pioneering spirit. The company got its start in the early 1970s, when founder Howard A. Goldenfarb began acquiring properties in the Old Port Exchange district of Portland, Maine. RAM's historic renovation of more than 20 buildings in this area is widely credited for the city's revitalization.
The firm is also recognized as a visionary in retail development. In 1983, when RAM developed the Maine Outlet, a purpose built factory outlet center, it was the first outlet center in Maine, and among the first 20 in the country. In the decades to follow, RAM would expand its portfolio to include residential communities, retail centers, and office and industrial facilities throughout New England and South Florida.

Services
From 1974 through 1986 RAM bought, restored and sold 22 office/retail buildings in the Old Port Historic District of Portland, Maine. RAM was the first company to complete comprehensive exterior and interior rehabilitations of these historic properties, most dating back to the 1860s.
The restoration of these properties, within the guidelines established by US Department of the Interior, began the revival of this historic district, which today is the tourism, retail, and business heart of Portland. Most of the buildings were of brick construction with retail space on the first floor and office tenants above.
