Bowie Bakery
Mr. Marquez, or "Don Angel" as he was affectionately known by friends and loved ones, began baking bread at the age of thirteen in his hometown of Sombrerete, Zacatecas in Mexico. As a young man, he moved to El Paso and began working for a bakery, where he met his wife, Maria Guadalupe Marquez. The couple relocated to California, but returned to El Paso in 1971.

In 1971, bringing with him many years of experience in the fine art of baking traditional Mexican pastries, Don Angel bought the little bakery that, to this day, sits at it's original location on the corner of 7th and Park Street. Throughout the 35 years of ownership by the Marquez Family, and after expanding the original building into the actual building, Bowie Bakery has become El Paso's premier establishment of baked goods.

Im in the bakery right now. First they have a coffee machine but don't sell coffee then the ladies attending the bread are in a very bad mood. Neither of them washed their hands or wear gloves to serve. To top off the bathroom is extremely dirty.

I have tried menudo from different places and Bowie Bakery on Doniphan is one of two places I found to have the tastiest kind. I also bought green chicken tamales, but will return to buy some of that good looking pan dulce that was flirting with me. The lady taking our orders that morning seemed stressed out, I guess that's why she wasn't very patient or pleasant with the customers. I hope she remembers that us across the counter are just trying to get our food and not trying to annoy her.

Very disappointed! Asked for 3 different enpanadas and was given only 2. They were all dough with almost a tablespoon of filling, very dry and the employee barely spoke english and was too busy texting before taking our order.
Then they wanted to charge 75 cents for a box.
We won't be back.

Wanted to buy just one item. Arrived at 11:54am on this Sunday morning. We spoke to someone on the phone and they told us they close at noon and were already closing up. We got to the door and had the door locked. One of the employees rudely told us they were already closed.
It says on their door they close at 12pm. Online it says they close at 1pm. If it says 12pm youā€™re open til 12pm. We showed up before they closed. We didnā€™t show up at 12pm, 12:01 or 12:02. Thatā€™s no way to run a business.
Love their baked goods and burritos. Too bad their employees close up whenever they feel like

Bowie Bakery is a hidden gem located behind Walgreens and Jack in the Box. After living here part time for the last 6 years I am pleased to say that this is a great Mexican bread bakery. Mexican pastries and tamales are prepared daily.
These tamales are outstanding and I consider the best that I've tried here in El Paso putting lupita's tamales to shame. The hot food section is closed by 1:00 p.m. Typical Mexican pastries are available including refrigerated pastries like chocolate dipped strawberries and flan.
The nut cookie is the star of the show. (see pic) I think they are made with some

After trying the Bowie Bakery location near downtown, we were super excited to try this one on the West Side.

The pastries are delicious and very well-priced, just like they are at the downtown location! For checking in here on Yelp for the first time, I received a coupon for 50 cent donuts on Wednesdays. Our favorites are the glazed & chocolate iced.

I also really like their large cookie topped with coconut flakes and fruit-filled pastry. We will definitely be back soon for more 50 cent donuts and to try more pastries!

Decent burritos but definitely not the best in town. Counter person seemed lost in a daze and I had to repeat my machaca burrito order three times before he comprehended it. Then he had to come back to me to make sure he heard me right.

I didn't try any of the baked goods although they were mouth watering to look at. The variety of goods was broad. I vow to come back just to sample one of everything. The shop was exceptionally clean.

The burrito prices were comparable to most other places but I have seen smaller shops with a greater selection. i will return for baked goods and perhaps tamales

I have always loved their food but this is the last time. The employees are rude, refused to check on my burrito order after an hour, and it turns out my order was never put in. I wish this were the only time it's happened. I can't come here anymore.

Fabulous TresLeches cake. Although I asked for strawberries on top when I ordered it. When I picked it up neither of the people working there could put strawberries on it for me.

Visited this place on a Sunday and the staff was very attentive. The selection is always top notch and the taste is even better. Not the same as going to the original bakery but it sure keeps the nostalgia within me.

I went in looking for a birthday cake/cupcake and the female baker rudely and arrogantly told me they DONT do anything custom and then stated out of no where and I will not recommend any other bakers. She was very arrogant and rude.

Well then... Today was a rollercoaster of emotions. I walked into this bakery feeling very hopeful on trying their tamales and all sorts of goodies. Their arrangement of pastries was very extensive and looked very enticing. I made a point to stop here to grab something delicious for breakfast before we start our fishing trip for the day. So i was ready!

Alas, my excitement was short lived upon realizing the only tamales they had were cold ones leftover from yesterday and it was only a jalapeƱo cheese one. Had my heart set on a meat filled warm one. At least she was honest about it and said they

The quality of the bread has decreased. Today we purchased the Rosca de Reyes at the Doniphan location, which we buy from them every year, it was awful. The bread was stale and did not have good flavor. Very disappointed.

Wow- we all are familiar with the expression "like a kid in a candy store"...well take an adult with a super sweet tooth and put them in this place! I have never seen danish or cinnamon rolls this big in my entire life!
I went in around 10am thinking it would not be busy, but it is coffee break time and there was a steady stream of customers coming in the door. I did settle on a "pig cookie" those little brown pigs- mine was pretty big, but tasted just as it should. It was soft like cake but also like a cookie with that rich molasses taste- so delicious!
The service was friendly

Went on a Saturday to try the tamales that everyone is talking about just to be informed that the were out. They put your pastries in a food tray that looks like is barely washed. I watched the attendant put the tray back in the pile after serving our food. Not to sanitary. Selection is okay.

I absolutely love this place. My in laws are regulars and they take us here every time we visit them in El Paso.

I love their breakfast burritos and I always get the green chile burrito. Spicy and absolutely delicious. Their tamales are really tasty too and their bread's just to die for! My in laws always bring bread and burritos with them when they come to visit us in Phoenix.

They have tons of pastries (huge ones, by the way), cookies and cakes and cupcakes. It's a small place but they have some tables inside and outside of the bakery so you can sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee

Bowie bakery has some of the finest pastries in El Paso. Their tres leches cake is my favorite and their cream cheese pastries are always sweet and fluffy. They have really good tamales but are extremely spicy. The wait is not very long and the staff is usually very friendly.

What am I missing? Maybe they had less variety because I went on a Sunday, but the choices were minimal and the bread / sweets were unremarkable. I may check out the original location at some point to see how it compares.
