My approach to therapy is open, warm, and informal. I believe that the key to success in therapy lies within the relationship that is formed. If you are given a nurturing and accepting environment to explore your life and your relationships, then healing and growth can take place. As a result, therapy can be tremendously rewarding and lead to lifelong positive change.

My first priority is to listen -- to understand your perspective and life experience. My therapeutic approach is collaborative. I tailor my intervention to meet your specific needs and help you access your own strength and wisdom. By creating an atmosphere of acceptance, I can help you gain insight into your current challenges.
Services
My approach to therapy draws upon a spectrum of theoretical backgrounds - Attachment, Humanistic/Existential, Solution-Focused, Cognitive Behavioral, Psychodynamic and Family Systems. I have diverse work experience and a wide variety of clients, leading to a broad focus for treatment.

With respect to adult counseling services, I specialize in treating Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, Life Adjustments (divorce, unemployment, death of a loved one, etc.), Trauma, Addictions and Bipolar Disorder. My practice also involves couples counseling and family therapy, where I create understanding of the underlying dynamics that drive conflict and how these can be approached in ways that are more productive and that strengthen relationships.
I received my masters and doctoral degrees at Washington University in St. Louis, where I was able to come in contact with world-class faculty. During those years, I provided therapy and assessment services both on and off-campus. I then did a one-year internship in North Portland at Delaunay Family Services.

25 years of marriage can lead some to drift onto separate individual paths. We needed/need to find a way to navigate those trails and reconnect our lives with one another.
Our time with Dodson was/is spent wisely listening then advising us on how to find and bond this new chapter in life as empty nesters.
He does not spend our valuable time having us ‘mirror one another’s comments’, instead we are learning how to tap into the deeper emotion fueling our resentment, hurt and confusion. This can result in stopping the argument before they become an all or nothing confrontation.

I have always enjoyed the perspective and insight offered. I feel like Don has my best interest in mind and tries to help me see the changes I need to make not just tell me what to do.

Doesn't understand family relationships. He was unhelpful and unskilled in working with people on the spectrum. If you go over on any visit he will charge you extra -no grace or kindness-. My family feels that this was a waste of time and money, and left us feeling angry and saddened. I strongly advise looking elsewhere.

Don is an excellent therapist. I've visiting him for over a year now and every visit has been a good experience. Don provides a comfortable space and has helped me work through several life problems. I've developed healthier relationships and a clearer understanding of myself by talking to him. By now therapy feels more like talking to a good friend.
