HandyMensch Home Remodeling
A Mensch (pronounced men-ch) is a person with the qualities one would hope for in a dear friend or trusted colleague. In the Yiddish language (a mixture of German and Hebrew), it is used to identify someone with integrity, honor, and a sense of what is right. Being called a real mensch is the highest compliment one can receive.

We get that question from time to time when speaking with a new customer about our remodeling services. It does take a bit of Chutzpah (another Yiddish word meaning audacity) to claim the title but we look at it differently. It sets a level of expectation with our customers that we have to live up to every day.
Services
HandyMensch Home Remodeling specializes in remodeling projects that are too large for the neighborhood handyman but too small for the General Contractor that deals with large additions. Our work includes kitchen remodeling, bathroom remodeling, basement remodeling, deck building and significant structural repairs/modifications.
Remodeling a kitchen involves more than selecting cabinets and countertops. Start with design that reflects how you want to use the space. Do you need to open a load bearing wall for a larger space, rearrange the flow of the room so everyone stops bumping into each other, create more counter space to prepare that big meal or all of the above?
Bathroom Remodels are great room to have some fun in your house. Think of it like a really fun necktie paired with a conservative suit. Powder room remodels are especially good for something different. Want a more spa like zen feel in your master bathroom? Got a large space you want to redesign the layout or a small dark bathroom that needs some way to feel bigger and brighter?
Finishing your basement is a great way to add significant square footage to your home without the cost of an addition. Your basement project might be starting as an unfinished space or it could be an existing finished basement that needs to go to the next level. Along the way we can add a new bathroom, storage, home theater (man cave) or a new entertaining space.
Imagine a giant thumb pushing down on the roof of your house. That force (load) must be transferred through the structure and into the ground. When modifying walls that are load bearing the force must be properly transferred around the new opening.

When walls have been improperly modified, floor joists have been damaged or water has slowly rotted structural members the results are sagging floors, doors/windows that won't close properly or in the worse cases collapse. We start our analysis by bringing in our Structural Engineer so we can jointly develop a solution which involves a bit of math coupled with the feasibility of implementation.

We needed a master bathroom remodel, so we solicited a few bids. HandyMensch was not the cheapest bid, but we knew that we should go with Lenny because he carefully thought through our unique situation (a very narrow bathroom from the 90s) and clearly articulated our options. We made the right choice. Lenny and his team carefully managed the entire project from start to finish. The entire project ran like clockwork, no significant glitches or delays. We've seen our friends deal with absolutely disastrous renovations, so we are very happy that we didn't have to deal with any of that. And we are

Took two days to decline a job. Seems though their site says they take mid sized jobs, they really mean larger jobs.

Replacing everything in a kitchen except cabinets is too small.

I feel like they get this comment a lot and should really look to explain what they do better. Replacing an large kitchen floor, countertops, remodeling space to fit a 48 inch range, re-doing lighting and installing new appliances fits what I would call a mid sized job, but to them I guess we just call a handyman.

We are in process of a complete home renovation, and won't be considering handymensch for bigger

You might think Handy Mensch means handyman. It does not. Nice people but if you're not going big, don't bother. What I needed was beyond what a general handyman would take on. So like I said...very nice people but you'll need to be gutting things to be the right fit.

Lenny and his team did a fantastic job fixing our home from a real estate agent who took down a load bearing wall without the proper people or permits and did not disclose. Took over 8 contractors who would not take the job due to it's complexity to find Lenny. Him and his crew were EXCELLENT with communication, provided quality work/materials and was done as quickly as could with this complex job. This is his niche- he comes in and fixes issues too complex for the average company which also means he can create amazing spaces with what you currently have.

HandyMensch did an amazing job transforming my out of date small kitchen and dining area into a gorgeous rat in kitchen with triple the storage space. They also did a fantastic job replacing my damaged hard wood floors and installing recessed lighting. Their attention to detail and ideas for the little details made my new 1st floor fresh and inviting.

I had a dream for the last few years of having a bar in my basement. I spent a significant amount of time struggling to find companies with experience building bars. While I found companies that did renovations and a few of them had experience building bars, most preferred to take on larger projects than mine and also gave unbelievably expensive quotes. Fortunately Handy Mensch, led by Lenny Berger was recommended to me. I met with Lenny, and he had some great ideas and recommendations and was willing to take on a smaller project like mine. Lenny and his team guided me through the project, connected

HandyMensch remodeled our bathroom and basement and did a fantastic job. The work they did exceeded all our expectations - they clearly have a focus on quality and responsiveness. Everybody on the team was a pleasure to work with - professional, friendly and very knowledgeable. In fact, we asked HandyMensch to take over some other work we had previously contracted to another company because it was obvious in comparison that the HandyMensch team had a better understanding and ability to get it done. The construction process was very smooth. The quality of work and materials were of high quality

Lenny and team were amazing!
From the time we met, to the project close they took great care to keep me informed of the status, progress and next steps along the way. I am extremely happy with the outcome, but even more importantly, I felt like they were focused on making sure I had a great customer experience. I really cannot compare their level of engagement and communication to any other experience I've had with a remodel or contracting work.
They took the time to answer my questions, they asked me questions and guided me to answers I didn't know I needed to consider, and they helped make

HandyMensch has remodeled several areas for us. We continue to use them because they have excellent quality, communicate often, and are very transparent about where things are in the process. I highly recommend them for renovation projects. They took our dated library/sitting room and made it one of our favorite rooms in the house. We also had them add a screened in porch with heaters to replace our dilapidated back porch. Now we have an amazing outdoor space to live in too.

Frontier Plumbing has subcontracted on over a dozen projects. HandyMensch is stable contractor which seems to manage very well the clients desired concept of project and translate that to trades design / install work force. Communication and coordination is top notch both between General Contractor to Subs, Subs to Subs, and Client interface with subs--to resolve questions, hidden scope events etc--all excellent. They foster a dignified working environment--starting with proposal phases to coordination of work. They deliver high quality in product, and are reasonable to deal with as a sub-contractor

HandyMensch was referred to us for a kitchen facelift which came close eventually to a full remodel. They saved us 25% by retaining and refacing many of the existing cabinets but you would never know it by the kitchen now. Lenny and his crew are a pleasure to work with, keep you informed in advance of timelines (that they keep) and take care of many of the issues that come up often before you know about them. They come highly recommended and looking forward to working with HandyMensch on other projects to come.

I have assisted many of Lenny's customers over the last 6 years as one of his trusted vendors. I have never worked with another contractor who is as organized and able to manage his projects as well as Lenny can! He's quite impressive. Not only that, he is thoughtful and kind and a pleasure to work with! He truly is a Chief Mensch! If you are on the fence with who to hire, rest assured you are in good hands with The Handy Mensch. Your project will be of the utmost importance and you will feel totally taken care of! :-)

I was wondering why HandyMensch didn't have a higher rating. All of the bad ratings are about the proposal process. Not really what I'm most worried about when getting some work done, but to each his own.

I had a small roof leak covered up our home's previous owner which burst through the wall amidst last summer's deluge. When we pulled some drywall we discovered the Top Cap and Header Board were rotted, black mold on the drywall plus who knows what else. Beyond my capabilities but not big enough for most construction/remodeling contractors. A contractor friend of mine

I've used the HandyMensch twice (1st time, bathroom remodel and drywall repair) and most recently another bathroom remodel and a screened porch rescreening. Work is completed on time, on budget and with high quality materials. Home remodeling projects can be stressful, but I had complete confidence in the HandyMensch and give them the highest recommendation.

So we wanted to install 4 new bathroom sink faucets. After doing 1 kitchen faucet on my own, I did not want to do 4 more. So after shopping around we found The Handy Mensch and their prices were lower on this job than every plumber I contacted, and because I emailed pictures of the faucets and pipes, they did not need to waste my time by coming out to do an estimate, then coming another day to do the work.

Because of the blizzard scheduling became a little bit of a challenge, but Lenny and Tricia were very communicative of the situation. We settled on a day and time. They said they would be there

Lenny and Team do fantastic work! They do an excellent job of setting expectations prior to kicking off the project and do a great job of communicating progress once the project has been initiated. They take the time to make sure the work is being done correctly vs. just slapping together a quick solution and billing the customer like other contractors. Whether you need a skilled dry wall specialist, structural engineer, electrician, etc. Lenny brings together all the right skill sets to ensure your project is successful. The Team showed up on time each morning and made sure the work area was

Lenny is a life saver!! I had an emergency, and he was at my house in less than hour to not only temporarily fix my issue; but also recommended a company who could come back and assess and install the replacement parts I needed. It took 5 minutes for him to restore my piece of mind and put me on the path to resolving my house issue ASAP. He's great!
