The bunion deformity describes an enlarged, prominent, possibly arthritic big toe joint. As time passes, bunions get larger, stiffer, and may become extremely painful. The enlarged big toe joint can even prevent some from comfortably wearing shoes. Bunions can cause pain with every step, prevent you from walking properly, and occasionally lead to further complications.
With hammertoe deformities, the lesser toes buckle and claw at the ground with every step. This causes skin irritation, pain, affects the way you walk, may prevent you from comfortably wearing some shoes, and may even lead to wound formation. Some flexible hammertoes respond well to conservative treatment, while painful rigid hammertoes are easily corrected through surgery.
When a tendon becomes irritated and inflamed, this is called tendinitis. The amount of stress we put on our feet makes these tendons especially susceptible to injury. Normally, tendons are strong and flexible, but over time they can become weak, stiff, thin, and painful. Minor injuries repeated over a lifetime or a direct traumatic event can both cause tendinitis.
