Rick Penman is a Carlsbad native and has been serving the dental needs of children for over 20 years. He attended Buena Vista Elementary, Valley Jr. High, and Carlsbad High School. He went on to attend Point Loma Nazarene University on a Cross-Country and Track & Field scholarship. Initially a biology major, he continued his studies at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, where he graduated and continued his training in Pediatric Dentistry.
A pediatric dentist is specifically trained to diagnose and treat the specific needs of children. Typically, a pediatric dentist has been trained two to three years in addition to dental school, in a university or hospital-based setting. It is recommended that children should be seen either by the time they get their first tooth or by age 1, whichever comes first.
As you may know, a pediatric dentist sees and treat children from birth to age 18 - up to age 21 for special needs patients. This age range presents a diverse set of behavioral and clinical challenges. Pediatric dentists complete extra, specialized training to help them meet the unique demands presented during childhood.
