Ward and Don Mayborn, brothers who grew up in the Bluffview area of Dallas, started selling antiques out of the bottom floor of an old house on Fairmount Street in Uptown Dallas in 1971. They started the store by taking turns traveling to England to stock the store with shop interiors, signs, and British collectibles.
The people from whom they purchased in England quickly became friends - and are friends to this day. In 1984, Ward's son, Scott, became a partner in Uncommon Market. In 2008, all of the Mayborn's packed up and moved to the Design District. Ward and Don continued the fine tradition of the Uncommon Market, and Scott and Laura opened Uncommon Lighting, which focuses on antique and custom lighting and custom fabrication.
