The mission of NAMI is to promote recovery and improve the quality of life for all who are afflicted by mental illness by providing support, education, and advocacy. NAMI, which stands for National Alliance on Mental Illness, is a grassroots organization. Our circle logo contains blades that represent grass.
There were hundreds of local groups of people, banding together out of urgent need, which existed in the 1970s. Atlanta Friends of the Mentally Ill was one of those groups. In 1979 a few leaders decided to unify these groups into a national organization, governing through state affiliates. The Georgia Alliance for the Mentally Ill, formed in the mid 80s, was further unified nationally by using the acronym NAMI before the local area name.

Peer-to-Peer is a FREE 10-week recovery education course that offers a holistic approach to recovery. This course allows individuals diagnosed with a mental illness to share experiences and gain further insight into their mental health.
Participants come away from the course with a binder of hand-out materials, as well as many other tangible resources: an advance directive; a "relapse prevention plan" to help identify tell-tale feelings, thoughts, behavior, or events that may warn of impending relapse and to organize for intervention; mindfulness exercises to help focus and calm thinking; and survival skills for working with providers and the general public.

NAMI's support groups are unique because they follow a structured model to ensure you and others in the group have an opportunity to be heard and to get what you need. Connections Support Group is a support group for individuals experiencing a mental health condition. Individuals do not need a formal diagnosis to attend.

I started going to the family support group in Johns Creek 3mo ago and then started the Family to Family 12week course. What a positive difference it has made dealing with my loved one. I'm sorry for those that had a bad experience because this is beyond the hardest thing I've ever dealt with. Please don't give up and try to find the help you need!
