I could start off this section by listing my credentials and clinical experience but that would be boring. Really, what you want to know is, do I understand what you're going through? Can I help you with anxiety? Do I know how get rid of your trauma symptoms? First, I want to let you know that I'm someone who understands on a personal level what it's like to experience and overcome problems like trauma, substance use, depression, and anxiety.
Anxiety is like watching a scary movie and bracing yourself to be afraid, but nothing happens, so you're just constantly on-edge waiting. Then there's panic attacks which literally feel like your dying. You go to the hospital only to find out "there's" nothing wrong with you. The sense of always being a little afraid that an anxiety attack is waiting around the corner.
Someone you love dies unexpectedly. A car accident. A rape or sexual assault. Neglect, betrayal, or abandonment in childhood. War. A trauma is anything that overwhelms a person's ability to cope. Traumas can be a one time event (like a death or an accident), or they may be repeated over time (such as being in an abusive relationship).
I love this quote because it's so true when it comes to the positive effects of Accelerated Resolution Therapy. Imagine experiencing the sudden and tragic loss of the person you love the most in this world. After losing this person, you can't stop from seeing images in your mind of them passing away.
You are going to bed at night and waking up in the morning telling yourself, I'm done with this. I mean it this time. No more drinking. Or it sounds something like, This is the last time. I'm cutting down, and by next week, I'm done. Maybe you get a few days, weeks, or months, but when the stress hits, you always go back to it.
