A North Country native, Steve grew up in Keeseville, one of five children. His first full time job was working for Torrington Industries, a local contracting firm where he was a maintenance man for the concrete plant. It was in that job that he learned about the excavation business, which helped him get where he is today.
With $3,500 he bought a 1959 dump truck and a 1964 John Deere backhoe. He started out with small jobs; installing septic systems, building foundations, and constructing driveways for local residents. After working on his own for three years, he hired his first employee, Doug Decker. Denise worked for a local engineering company and took care of the fledgling company's finances at night until she joined the company full-time in 1987.
