Most nursing homes in the U.S. are certified by Medicare and Medicaid, and they must show they are in compliance with the Nursing Home Reform Act in order to receive payments from these government agencies. The Act was passed by Congress in 1987 following a study by the Institute of Medicine, which concluded that nursing home residents were being abused, neglected, and given inadequate care.
Assisted living facilities have a responsibility to meet care standards and must be held accountable for the safety of all patients. Many Maryland families choose assisted living for their loved ones who can no longer live independently but don't want or need to live in a nursing home. The person may need help with activities of daily living (ADL) such as toileting, dressing, feeding, bathing, personal hygiene, etc.
