El Colegio-Public Arts & Environment High School
El Colegio is a small public high school in Minneapolis that has been serving students in English and Spanish since 2000. El Colegio engages students in challenging, profound learning experiences that integrate research-based teaching strategies with cultural and traditional practices of the families we serve.

We provide a supportive and personalized environment so that students are known well and are individually supported to meet the challenges of high school and beyond. El Colegio students develop the skills and personal qualities needed to be successful in college and employment, to be comfortable and excel in a bilingual, bicultural environment, and to be leaders in their communities and the world.
Services
Founded in 2000 by a collective of teachers, El Colegio High School is a public, tuition-free charter school located in the Bancroft neighborhood of south Minneapolis. We are, first and foremost, a black and brown space on indigenous Dakota land. In a neighborhood that is increasingly gentrified, our school remains a bastion of talent, culture and Latinx heritage.
As a small school, El Colegio has the capacity to focus on the whole person, the whole family, and our collective role in the broader, intersecting metropolitan ecology. We provide student-centered learning, a robust college and career readiness program, and above-and-beyond 1:1 support that lead to our youth graduating with bright post-secondary futures.
Create a classroom environment that is culturally competent, engaging and respects the dignity, maturity and interests of the students. Work collaboratively with other teachers to create real world, project based units to explore complex problems and critical thinking that rest on the core values of El Colegio in innovative two week "Synthesis" sessions.
El Colegio High School is the heart of a larger community vision of culture, arts, and education. By observing our students and community values, the atmosphere of the building is welcoming, safe, respectful and inclusive. Students and families from all cultures are respected and nurtured equally. El Colegio is the cornerstone of a larger cultural and educational center that is an accessible gathering place for the community at-large.
Charter schools are tuition-free, public schools. By law, charter schools are free and open to any student in the state of Minnesota. They are governed and operated jointly by licensed teachers, parents, and community members. Charter schools operate on three basic principles: accountability, choice, and autonomy.
