Carya Ecological Services, LLC has the botanical, ecological, and soils expertise to help plan and permit ecologically friendly commercial and residential projects. We also review proposed projects for towns, land trusts, and community groups, assessing the potential for adverse impacts on wetlands or natural resources.

Carya principal Sigrun Gadwa, MS PWS conducts surveys for rare plants, and provides expert testimony in both civil and court proceedings, pertaining to wetlands and land use matters. Carya Ecological has conducted natural resources inventories and written supporting narratives for successful open space applications, most recently in Hamden, Berlin, and Middletown.

Sigrun N. Gadwa, MS, PWS is a consulting ecologist, professional wetland scientist, and registered soil scientist, based in Cheshire, Connecticut. She holds an MS from UConn Storrs in Ecology and BA in Biology from Brown University. Her business, Carya Ecological Services, LLC, specializes in applying ecological principals and knowledge of native botany to a wide range of client projects.
Restoration and wetland creation projects often mitigate or "make amends" for an unavoidable wetlands loss. Wetland mitigation may be accomplished through open space acquisition, preferably in the same watershed as the wetland loss.

Control of invasive plant infestations and replanting with native species is another type of restoration; wetland mitigation though "creation" typically involves establishment of a wetter hydrology, followed by native plantings.A mitigation package for a large project is likely to include some of each of the above, closely following Army Corps of Engineers' Guidelines.
Our work is based on a solid grasp of relevant state statutes, local regulations, wetland ecology, and the scientific literature on wetland buffers and different wetland classes. Our reports are thorough, based on field investigations, on-line resources, and the experience gleaned from over 22 years in the field.
We recommend only highly targeted use of herbicides, carefully avoiding the intermixed native species, e.g. Invasive status varies from place to place - and ecologists, regulators - and gardeners- do not necessarily agree!

Plants began hitchhiking to New England among the seeds colonists brought for their herb gardens and in the ballast (dirt) that filled the empty holds of ships traveling back to New England, for another load of old growth lumber or sassafras.Which of these immigrants are "invasive" and which are not?
For the wetland permit applications that we support, we provide detailed guidance for our clients on how to include "green" design, native landscaping, state-of the art stormwater management, and appropriate buffers. Conversely, we identify deficiencies or strengths in these areas, in the applications that we review.
