The MECU Credit Union story begins in 1936. During the height of the Great Depression, Baltimore workers were struggling to make ends meet. Numerous banks were closing and loan sharks were charging exorbitant interest rates and taking advantage of the working class. To ensure Baltimoreans were able to access affordable financial services, city employees joined together and MECU was founded.
It all begins with your hard work. Next, you take your earnings and put them into an account at MECU. Then, it's our turn. Thanks to our high deposit rates, we make generous payments to your savings accounts and to certain checking accounts. And that contribution means you end up with a good deal more than you started with.
Your actual APR may be higher based on your loan amount, repayment term, collateral, credit history and ability to repay. MECU will pay the initial closing costs. If the loan is paid off and closed within 12 months of original note date, closing costs must be reimbursed to MECU by the borrower. Closing costs vary and generally range around $850 to $1,000 on a $20,000 loan.

I wish I could give it a zero, during the Covid pandemic they did not help me at all. I was unable to make a loan payment they did not try to help me at all. l got a negative on my credit report the young lady representative attitude was terrible…. I tried to explain my case and see what options did I have they wouldn’t help me at all !!!!!! Definitely not recommend… at least this branch

Totally regret opening an account with this “credit union”. Have had to put up with terrible customer service, stolen credit card information that they continued to allow even after reporting it several times, and now outrageous overdraft fees due to shady account debit/credit processing. Looking forward to closing my account with them and never looking back.

Worst customer service on the planet. Never answer phones, have you on hold for hours. When you finally get through IF YOU GET THROUGH the representatives in the call center or wherever they are, they don’t want to accommodate you, they are very rude, unprofessional, in not knowledgeable of anything. I have had the worst experience with them even before COVID so that’s not an excuse it just keeps getting worse.

Not the best credit union or banking service. Don’t trust your money or credit with MECU! They don’t have your back dealing with unauthorized transactions. On one situation years ago I had to basically track down scammers in another state getting salon services on my penny! I’m grateful I caught the deadline to dispute by one day! speeding up to current year in a financial pandemic my card was unauthorizedly charged which put me into overdraft & yet again I’m told I have to go after the vendor or Better Business Bureau! Yes MECU is who I should report to BBB

Three checks over the course of 2 years on my auto loan have been lost in the mail or at their processing. You cannot make a payment online through their website unless you have a checking account through them. So funny because I several other farm and home loans through other banking corporations and I can pay them online through non-related bank accounts. So, I now opt to pay by phone. Even one of these phone transactions were never processed and had to be made again a week later. The waiting time to get to someone to make a payment by phone will run you anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. I

I wish I could give them 0 stars. Just spoke to a Supervisior Katie, they are crooks. They consistently hold crediting funds while they debit debit debit to create fees. I asked why their practices were different from other banks and I was told they have their own rules. They will nickle and dime your account. Stay away!!!!

Every since July 9, 2021 I've had a bad experience with Mecu and I've been with them 20 some years they need to train some of their staff much more better applied for a secure credit card do not like the rules they're gonna call it a loan when I'm deposit in my own money to build my credit up starting out on that date I signed all papers the next day they tell me that I had to come in and sign the papers again then when I look again I had to go back again three times dealing with MecuThen the expedite the card to FedEx as long as I've been a member at MECU they spelled

Just opened this account on Friday, Customer service called me to "Welcome" me to MECU. I needed her to explain how a CD account works, and she said she didn't know and she "would need to read off the website" and once she gave an explanation that was very nonsensical, she said did I need anymore help and I told her "no, I will do more research myself" She said "ok." and hung up. She did no "welcoming" what so ever. and these reviews do not do MECU any justice, definitely making me reconsider my choice. Ill keep this account for now but once my loans for school are deposited I will be going elsewhere

Have a custodial account. Had to make a few withdrawals due to financial hardship. I now have no job and need to close the account. I went to make a withdrawals and was told i need to write a letter to someone in the main office downtown baltimore explaining why i need to access the account? The account is currently expelled. No money, gas, nor food to feed my kid and i need to write a letter to remove MY money.

I wanted to support a local credit union but honestly, I've had a terrible experience with MECU since I started my auto loan with them in December. Took me WEEKS to get everything sorted because MECU reps wouldn't get back to me or claimed they didn't have paperwork I sent many times. I was without a car for weeks because of their delays and poor communication but I stuck with it because of their low interest rates. I’ve been banking with MECU for several years. They haven’t been very helpful with much of my needs. The loan process is bad, the system is dated and the customer service is horrible. I literally had a rep put me on hold for an hour to “review my account” and never came back to the phone. I hung up and called back, just to get a rep who wasn’t sure how to review my account. I switched to another credit union just to test them out and the difference is night and day. Looking forward to closing my account and having my family switch theirs over as well.

This is one if not the most fee accessing institutions ive ever dealt with. They have some of the worst customer service when it comes to resolving issues and or assistance. I made an ATM deposit with a check from a company ive deposited checks from before and they put a 5 day hold and would not reduce it so i had multiple overdrafts which of course means 30$ per what a get over

If I could give 0 stars, I would. I've called MECU HQ building multiple times to be left on hold for 30+ minutes. I have a debit account with them and have had my card declined MULTIPLE times when there was money in my account. Today was the last straw. I tried to use my MECU card to purchase gas at BJ's Wholesale Club only to get the prompt "insufficient funds"on the pump, which left me stranded. I even double checked my online account JUST TO MAKE SURE. There was plenty of money for gas. So I called MECU to get this issue resolved AGAIN and I could not get ahold of a representative

Update: I ended up getting in contact with a compassionate representative from the bank's "tier-2" solutions dept. He actually listened to me and my unique concern, and we worked together to come to an amenable solution. All of my accounts are now current with them, and regular payments continue.
While I can't take away the initial horrible rating I gave them, I can say that if you are experiencing similar issues, don't give up! Request a 2nd tier collections representative. If you are lucky, you just might get someone who doesn't treat you like a deadbeat. I

Terrible I had a recurring BG&E every month this month due to the carnivorous pandemic money has been scares but I was told Mecu would help their customers in this time of need I had the money to cover the bill in my savings but forgot to transfer the bill ended up overdraft and Mecu added a 30 dollar overdraft charge when it wasn't even 24 hours that the account was over and by 2 cent 2 cent please don't use This predatory bank you're welcome

Most sluggishly incompetent people I've ever had the displeasure to suffer through. We applied for a loan seven weeks ago, for a 30-day contract. And when they demanded a 3-week extension, they failed to meet that deadline too. And every time *I* call, I get another request for documents they never requested in the first place, or another excuse. And if I don't call, there's no communication whatsoever.
Definitely use this bank if you want a headache and to most likely lose a house-purchase contract.

This is my second post in two days. I was so disappointed, unhappy, and frustrated with not getting what I needed, when I needed it. I was also completely unimpressed with the level of customer service which I had received so I took to Yelp. In the meantime, I say a PSA from Tom P the marketing chief who said that MECU was attempting to "rebrand" itself especially in the area of customer service. My thought was "well that's not working" and again I let it be known on Yelp.

My biggest issue is how long it takes MECU to issue payments from my e-bill statements. It's like they don't want to let the funds go I have friends that got late payments because mecu failed to issue payment in timely matter. On the other hand if I have cash funds transferred from an outside bank to my Mecu account, the outside bank sent note that cash was transferred and available the next day. Mecu took 5 days to post this transfer to my account. If you are paying bills and time is a factor....pay it thru the Creditor's website.

Terrible. Logistics, customer service and all. I may as well get paid for managing their employees. There's no way I should have to call every two weeks to make sure someone is doing their job correctly. Why would you create a "new" service for mortgages and they new servicer isn't equipped or knowledgeable to help or resolve issues. Every time I call MECU to speak with a MECU representative I'm forwarded to these new people and they don't know anything!!

This is absolutely the worst bank. I have been banking with them since I was in highschool(15 years) and I've absolutely had it. The fees are outrageous and they offer no solutions that actually help. Their customer service has always been unprofessional and that isnt just my opinion, but the opinion of almost all of the people I know who bank with mecu. Please keep your money away from them and save yourself a headache with the lack of professionalism especially at the main bank and when you call the corporate number. They are the worst! I'm going to send my fax to close this account

If I could rate this credit union any lower, trust me, I WOULD! I HATE having an account with MECU. I have had my account with this credit union for almost twenty years and I REGRET ever opening an account (at the recommendation of someone else). I am currently making arrangements to CLOSE ALL of my accounts and pay off loans in order to be DONE! I only conduct financial business through credit unions and MECU is by far the worse. I paid my auto loan off and they held my lien release for $0.18! Apparently, they have a cut-off time for processing payments. If your payment is received after a certain time they don't post it until the next day. When they posted my payment a day late, my payoff amount increased by $0.18, since the payoff they gave me was "only good for that day."
So yes, they held my lien release until I brought them the final amount due. I had to drive 20 minutes to give these clowns a quarter - didn't even bother to get my change.
