Utah Physicians For A Healthy Environment
Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment is dedicated to protecting the health and well-being of the citizens of Utah by promoting science-based health education and interventions that result in progressive, measurable improvements to the environment and our health. Cities are the experimental laboratories of economic growth, social justice, and public health.

They are the incubators of new ways of trying to make a decent life for their citizens. Some cities are embracing the model of "Donut Economics" in their decision-making, a visual framework for sustainable and healthy development. Our public outrage and pushback from Salt Lake City's mayor and City Council is undoubtedly what pressured UIPA Director Jack Hedge to delay taking a vote on the bond.

We were selected for the EPA Environmental Justice Small Grant and a grant from the Centers for Disease Control through Salt Lake County Housing Department to lower the risk of blood lead poisoning in children and increase blood lead level testing. Through the collaborative work of UPHE consultant, Dr. Claudia Fruin and the Utah Lead Coalition we have updated and improved lead poisoning treatment guidelines and risk assessments.
Air pollution provokes a systemic inflammatory process centered in the vascular network that delivers blood through the body, including all the major organs. The impact at the level of individual cells includes oxidative stress, endothelial cell death, cytotoxicity, macrophage infiltration, and alteration of lipid deposition.

THE best environmental organization in the world - full stop. They listen to the SCIENCE (unlike some other environmental groups - ahem NRDC and EDF - and even some government agencies - ahem CARB and EPA) and use it to advocate for and shape policies that ACTUALLY HELP improve the lives of people in Utah and beyond. They aren't afraid to stand up to big corrupt corporations and even small fly-by-night operations. They call out pseudoscience and deniers whenever they pop up. They excel in their lawsuits. And Dr. Moench? That man is a hero. A sharp, wise, witty, hero.

This organization is out of touch with reality and is using their academic and professional titles to gain attention in silly lawsuits. It’s groups like this that threaten the wild culture of utah and divert attention from the real issues plaguing the state.

Currently without diesel and home heating oil millions would freeze to death. What is your financially realistic answer and plan to end use of such fuels. Just saying people need to be able to afford brand new electric cars and use 100 percent solar is not realistic and doesn't get us to a solution.

For those who love diesels, I'm a chemist who spent a career in research for a major oil company, so I know something about them. Yes, it is indeed true that diesel engines are more efficient than gasoline engines due to the thermodynamics of how they work. However, the higher temperatures and pressures of a diesel (the factors responsible for the increased efficiency) also increase production of nitrogen oxides. Until the sulfur level of diesel fuel was reduced, diesels emitted much more SOx and particulates than gasoline engines and still produce lots of NOx. The UPHE is trying to reduce ALL

UPHE from the begging has done a fantastic job speaking up for the health and well being of Utah residents and the beautiful environment that makes this state a great place to live. Having them on the side of the people fighting against air pollution with science as their main weapon is something I would like to see on a larger scale, and am so thankful to have here in Salt Lake. Rock on UPHE.

Ignorant and ridiculous to say that diesel creates more pollution, more of a carbon footprint or harm to the environment than gas, corporate emissions, emissions from lds owned businesses or buildings or lastly..... MEDICAL WASTE! get a grip!

Your company needs to get educated as to the benefits of diesel. Not only is it 30% more fuel efficient, it's better for the environment then gasoline.
"Indeed, diesel engines can emit a fair amount of nitrogen compounds and particulate matter as they burn diesel fuel. These facts combined to give diesel fuel a bad environmental name, even though it in fact emits lower amounts of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide than does gasoline."

This group does amazing work to help bring to light the major air quality problems Utah is facing. We need to make changes. I appreciate all their efforts to try to make our state a better and more healthy place.
