In 1981, Peter and Mary Beaman decided to pull roots from the D.C. area and move themselves and their two young sons to the Delaware Beaches. The Beamans left a federal government job with the National Zoo and a physical therapy position with the Maryland public school system to pursue the dream of starting their own antique business.
The Beamans chose to relocate to Sussex County because of its beautiful beaches and close proximity to family. With the help of a VA loan and a healthy case of imagination and vision, a commercial and residential property on Route 1 was purchased at 1503 Highay One, Lewes Delaware where Beaman's Old & Gnu Antiques was born.
