It's a law of unintended consequences. Faced with a budget deficit, the state legislature-in the final hours of the 2015 legislative session-approved a 6 percent healthcare tax on ambulatory surgery centers, known as ASCs. There were no hearings, no discussion and no consultation with the industry, the implications of that decision were largely unidentified, unknown and uncertain.
In 2015, the Connecticut General Assembly passed 11th-hour legislation at the close of the session that included a 6 percent gross receipts tax on ambulatory surgery centers. This tax translates to an effective income tax rate of 30 percent, as it does not allow for deductions for expenses, such as property, sales and use taxes.
In the interest of public health, and cost savings for patients, insurers and employers (including the State of Connecticut) ASCs should be lauded for making healthcare more affordable, not penalized for it. At 6%, Connecticut's ASC tax rate is AT LEAST 3 TIMES HIGHER than in other states, where the tax rates are 1-2%.

The staff was so kind and attentive to my concerns and needs. I highly anticipated my surgery and was nervous. However, the nurses and doctors who attended to me collectively put me at ease. Their knowledge, skill, professionalism and incredible genuine bed side manners are second to none. In spite of my circumstance, it was a true pleasure to work with them. I am most appreciative that they, along with my surgeon, made this a positive, successful experience. ♥️
