Our firm started serving the needs of the people in the Middletown area in a store front under the name of the Rockafellow Burial Company in 1899. In 1929, it purchased the former Galloway residence at eleven Orchard Street in downtown Middletown, and it became the Burnett Funeral Home.
Lester J. Burnett, owner and operator, died in 1952, and the business was taken over by Leroy J. Applebee, who had worked for the funeral home since the early 1930s.The name was then changed to the Applebee Funeral Home. Mr. Applebee retired in 1968, and the business was taken over by R. Barry McPhillips, who had served the firm for over a decade at that time.

I would never in a million years recommend this business to anyone: family, friend, not even an enemy.
My mother was on hospice and passed away at home last month. My sister and I called Applebee-McPhillips since they were recommended to us by hospice. Let me tell you... I couldn't believe my ears! The woman who answered the phone sounded so rushed and overwhelmed and inconvenienced. I keep saying it felt like we were calling to have old furniture picked up instead of our deceased mother's body! The woman who answered the phone at Applebee-McPhillips was curt and not warm or accommodating whatsoever

No words can explain how wonderful the family of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home is. My father deserved very special services and they assured that. They had everything very well planned and made us feel that we went above and beyond to have a beautiful service. With everything that have given us and done for us I can honestly say that this family knows how to make you feel that you have put your loved ones to Rest In Peace. I highly recommend this funeral home. We thank the family at Applebee’s for everything they have done for us!

I cannot say enough about this funeral home. We just lost our second son this past month, and this is a devastating time. Mary, Jodi, Victoria and Richard walked beside us every step of the way. They showered us with compassion, and love and it was genuine. To have them be with us and care for us with the passing of two of my sons was comforting. Mary made it seem like they were her boys too. I just loved that. I knew they were in good hands. They truly take their job seriously and offer any kind of help you may need. We love you all!

My mother passed away in May. It was the in the during the COVID pandemic, as such there were numerous restrictions on services and burials. We couldn’t get a burial date for 3 weeks. In the meantime I was having my own health issues. Needless to say the stress was incredible.
I am so grateful for Applebee-McPhillips. They truly went the extra mile. They were compassionate, did whatever they could to ease the process. And while other funeral homes were clearly about money, Applebee-Mcphillips was not hundreds but a couple of thousand dollars lower than their competitors. Mary was incredible
