Each year, alumni and friends of the Second Ward High School National Alumni Foundation gather for the Annual Meeting and Reunion, three days of remembering and celebration. In 2010, we marked the 30th Anniversary of the founding of the Second Ward High School National Alumni Foundation. Please visit the Second Ward Foundation photostream to see the alumni sharing in their respective celebrations.

A special part of that anniversary began with a marker ceremony and continued in the old Second Ward gym with a program demonstrating the Foundation's work to preserve and share this community's African-American history and heritage. Alumni and friends have shared their photos of the special celebration and reunion events.

The first high school for African American students in Charlotte, Second Ward High School was the heart of a once flourishing black neighborhood. During a time of segregation, the school provided respect and safety. After the loss of the school, the alumni organized the Foundation in 1980 to keep the Second Ward legacy alive.
The Foundation was the result of a dream of three alumni, Dr. Mildred Baxter-Davis, Louis C. Coleman and Cecelia Jackson Wilson. In the 1960s they began to reminisce about their high school years. After watching Second Ward being torn down, they hope to create a permanent foundation.

They dedicated their energies to collecting the photos, trophies, yearbooks, newspapers and any other memorabilia to tell the history of the school and all the neighborhoods that once had students going to Second Ward. The Foundation, with the help of the City of Charlotte and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School, system erected this marker at 700 East Second Street, on the actual site of the school.
For more than 20 years, the Foundation has awarded college scholarships. The number of scholarships and the amount given depends on the funds raised each year in special Foundation projects. Each student awarded a scholarship is recognized at our Annual Meeting and Reunion during the Labor Day weekend.
Many alumni and family members choose to become part of The Hall of Fame. These supporters of the House/Museum have given a minimum of $1000. When you contribute on this level, your photo is permanently displayed proudly in the House on Beatties Ford Road and you are honored during the banquet at the foundation's Annual Meeting and Reunion.
The Class Fund directly supports our efforts to collect, preserve and share the stories of Second Ward and the area's African-American community. Give a donation which represents the year you graduated. If you graduated in 1949 you could give $19.49 or $194.90 or even more in those numbers. All amounts would be greatly appreciated.
