Exothermic generators are designed to produce cover gases for a variety of applications from use as a non-oxidizing atmosphere in the heat treating of bright metals, such as aluminum and copper, to providing a carburizing atmosphere for some metals to simply providing an inert, explosion-proof environment.
Two associated characteristics of ammonia dissociation which are of extreme importance are that clean, metallurgical grade, anhydrous ammonia contains virtually no water and no oxygen. When ammonia vapor is dissociated the resulting gas mixture is extremely dry, with a dew point of typically -40 °F to -60 °F.
The purpose of an atmosphere panel is to distribute the process gas generated by one or more atmosphere gas generators (usually ammonia dissociators or endothermic gas generators) to one or more atmosphere users. Typically a single generator is used to supply several furnaces. The atmosphere panel ensures a reliable and consistent allocation of the gas atmosphere to each furnace.
