Pain and walking problems should not be considered normal. Many knee, hip and back problems can be the consequence of foot instability or ill designed shoes. Many skin and nail conditions indicate a serious internal disease. The feet can reflect symptoms of diabetes, arthritis, immune problems, circulatory disorders and neuromuscular disorders.
Dr. Patricia Ferraro has been providing comprehensive podiatric care in South Lake Tahoe since 1991. She completed her undergraduate degrees in Biology and Forensic Science from Indiana University then headed west to attend podiatry school. She received her Doctorate from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco.
If you are experiencing painful swelling in the back of your foot just above the heel, you may be suffering from Achilles Tendonitis. This troublesome condition affects the Achilles tendon, which is the strongest and largest tendon in the body and connects the leg to the foot as it stretches from the lower leg to the heel bone.
Typically occurring in both feet, brachymetatarsia is a condition characterized by a short metatarsal. The foot has five metatarsals and this condition results in one shortened toe. If more than one of the long bones of the foot is affected, it is known as brachymetapody.
The causes of brachymetatarsia are genetic or situational, meaning that you can be born with it or it can be induced by premature closure in the metatarsal growth plate due to a trauma. If you suffer from brachymetatarsia, you may find it difficult to properly balance or smoothly transfer weight across the toes when walking or running.
