The Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth of New Jersey opened Saint Vincent Academy in 1869 and continue to sponsor the Academy. For 150 years, Saint Vincent Academy has graduated women of faith, service, character and competence - women whose hopes reach beyond themselves to the good of their families, friends, and neighbors.
Saint Vincent Academy has been witness and participant in the evolution of the City of Newark as it welcomed successive waves of immigrants, moved from a manufacturing base to a corporate center, struggled to address issues of racism and civil rights, and embraced the 21st century with renewed optimism.

Services
We educate in gratitude to our students' parents and guardians who chose the SVA community to be part of that village. Their decision comes with unfailing support and the sure sense that we share the noblest of goals - that of guiding our daughters into a fullness of their potential as learners and as women.
There are many good reasons to keep in touch with SVA and to tell us about your life and your work:. The SVA Alumnae Association is an active group of women who carry the Vincentian legacy into all parts of the world. SVA takes pride in their accomplishments and appreciates their dedication to service and their efforts to keep alumnae connected to their alma mater.
Academic excellence, sisterhood and service are the hallmarks of an SVA education. If you are willing to work hard, to follow the guidance of teachers committed to your well-being, and to respect and care for others, then we hope that you will apply for our freshman class or one of a limited number of openings in the 10th, 11th or 12th grades.
In 1859, Mother Mary Xavier Mehegan founded the New Jersey community of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth with their motherhouse in the City of Newark. With a mission of community service to the underserved, the Charities opened hospitals, orphanages, and schools. In 1869, they established Saint Vincent Academy (SVA).
Thank you for visiting our website to learn a bit about our school and our students, or to renew your connection, if you are an alumna or former student. Saint Vincent Academy is a very special place.
For 150 years, her light has shone here at the top of West Market Street in the City of Newark, illuminating for generations the path to successful, productive lives as caring women, as professionals in many walks of life, and as mothers, daughters, and sisters.
