When you or your child need braces, where will you go? You may have noticed that many dentists are providing orthodontic treatments. Dentists are educated in treating oral health, including your teeth and gums. Orthodontists are specialists with additional years of training beyond dental school. They focus on moving teeth and aligning jaws.
For the best results, choose an orthodontist who has specialized training in orthodontic care. Permanent teeth come in about age 7 and this is the recommended age to see an orthodontist. Healthy, straight teeth are important for many reasons. If your child's bite isn't aligned properly, tooth decay, gum disease, earaches and headaches, biting, chewing, and speaking issues can occur.

Services
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, a child's first orthodontic visit should be no later than age 7. The visit may indicate that your child's bite has no problems, or needs monitoring for later treatment, but in some cases, Dr. Patritto may suggest early treatment. Children at this age are more comfortable with braces because their friends are wearing them.
Because some dentists provide braces or aligners, you may wonder if it's necessary to go to an orthodontist. What you may not know is that orthodontists have completed dental school and more. They have chosen to take on another two to three years of post-graduate education and residency to become orthodontists, experts at diagnosing and treating misaligned teeth, irregular bite, and other problems related to abnormal tooth placement.

My wife called to setup an appointment for our daughter to get braces. The receptionist was nice and polite at first. Then when it came time to go over insurance and we mentioned we have dental insurance through the state, the receptionist got persnickety and said "we don't take state insurance."
Being as how there's no other orthodontists in southeast Iowa, I guess you're screwed if you're lower income and need your teeth fixed!
