Most of the time, losing those last 20 pounds is the most frustrating. You'd probably eat less if you felt full after eating a small amount of food. In fact, the essential component of almost every weight-loss surgery - is making the stomach smaller so you eat less to lose weight. You may have often wished there was another, less invasive option to gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric banding to lose 20 to 50 pounds or more.
Plication is a relatively new technique and therefore performed by much fewer surgeons when compared to procedures such as Gastric Bypass. Sleeve surgery removes most of the stomach ("gastrectomy"), which includes the part of the stomach on the left side that stretches to allow you to eat a larger amount of food.
Gastric Plication is more academically known as Greater Curve Plication surgery. When we started performing this procedure it had such a variety of complicated names that we referred to it as WRAP (Weight Reduction Assistance Procedure), because we thought it would be easier for patients to remember.
Some people don't want to take on the idea of having a surgical procedure to achieve satisfactory weight loss, they simply want a 'kick-start' to help them finally lose some weight successfully. Gastric balloon (or Intragastric balloon) is the newest procedure we offer for patients interested in a really minimally invasive way to assist in losing weight, since it does not require surgery.
In a Gastric Bypass, the stomach is cut into two sections: a smaller upper "pouch" and larger lower "remnant". The small intestine is cut in two and the lower intestine is attached to the upper stomach with stapler/sutures, the upper intestine is stapled/sewn to the lower intestine. Patients typically stay in the hospital for 2 nights or more.
