University Bariatrics
Thank you for visiting us as part of your journey towards better health. The practice name is based on our founder, Dr. Amir Mehran, and his academic background as the past Chief of UCLA Bariatric Surgery.

In an industry inundated with "quick fixes" and flashy sales pitches, he has strived to distinguish himself through an unwavering commitment to the three fundamental pillars of successful weight-loss surgery: patient education, patient preparation, and patient safety. These same guiding principles he established at UCLA have been carried over to his new private practice, University Bariatrics.
Services
Since the late 1950s, various surgical procedures have been devised to assist in weight loss. Some, such as the gastric bypass and duodenal switch, have withstood the test of time. Others, like the jejunoileal bypass and banded gastroplasty, have been abandoned. Now, new procedures are currently being debated to determine what is the best operation available.
More commonly known as the gastric sleeve, laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy (LVSG) is rising in popularity. Similar to the duodenal switch (DS), the hormonally active portion of the stomach is removed, with the remaining tubular segment restricting oral intake. However, in contrast to both the gastric bypass (RYGB) and the DS, there is no intestinal rerouting; hence, no malabsorptive component.
Duodenal switch (DS), also known as the biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS), is a predominantly malabsorptive operation. It entails the removal of a portion of the stomach and the rerouting of the majority of the intestinal tract. The combination of reduced caloric intake and the significant malabsorption that ensues leads to a high rate of sustained weight loss.
Advanced laparoscopic and conventional general surgery are core components of bariatric surgery. Our program does offer a wide range of general surgery procedures on both routine and emergency basis. Laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery including on the stomach, colon, appendix, small intestine, and gallbladder.
Adjustable bands have a 100% lifetime re-operation rate. The revisional surgeries can include placement of another band, simultaneous or staggered conversion to a stapled procedure, or a simple explanation without additional surgeries. There are pros and cons to each choice. At University Bariatrics, one of our primary goals is to educate patients about all of the available options.

I wanted to sincerely thank doctor Mehran and his staff. I had a giant lipoma on my back and doctor Mehran with his tremendous experience walked me through the procedure prior to conducting the surgery. He is extremely professional, knowledgeable, humble, honest and very meticulous. The day I went for my surgery, I know that I am in a good hand. Thank you so much doctor Mehran.
