The Softwood Lumber Board (SLB) is an industry-funded initiative established to promote the benefits and uses of softwood lumber products in outdoor, residential, and non-residential construction. Think Wood enables those who specify building materials to "think" wood use, and increases awareness of wood's benefits in non-residential applications.

American Wood Council pursues opportunities to use building standards development venues, technical research, and design tools to open new markets for softwood lumber. Think Wood focuses on promoting softwood lumber's benefits for the use of structural and appearance products in, on and around the home.

Under the Softwood Lumber Checkoff, assessments are collected from importers of record and U.S. manufacturers of softwood lumber. All companies are exempt from paying assessments on their first 15 million board feet shipped to, or within, the United States. Since the program's inception, companies have been required to report and pay assessments directly to the Softwood Lumber Board.
Under the Softwood Lumber Checkoff, all U.S. manufacturers and importers of record of softwood lumber are exempt from paying assessments on their first 15 million board feet shipped to, or within, the United States. The Final Rule states that the Checkoff will be financed by an assessment on softwood lumber domestic manufacturers and importers, and will be administered by a board of industry members selected by the Secretary of Agriculture. The purpose of the program is to strengthen the position of softwood lumber in the marketplace, maintain and expand markets for softwood lumber, and develop new uses for softwood lumber within the United States.
