This procedure involves stapling an upper portion of the stomach to create a smaller pouch. The surgeon connects the pouch to the lower intestine, bypassing the majority of the small intestine where calories and nutrients are absorbed. Additionally, changes in hormones work to promote fullness. This procedure involves removing the lateral aspect (or side) of the stomach.
It works by limiting or restricting the amount of food that you can eat. In addition, it is believed that by removing the part of the stomach that produces the Grehlin hormone, that patients lose their appetite. The Duodenal Switch procedure provides both weight loss and long-term resolution of comorbid conditions.

Obesity is the number one public health concern in the 21st century. Nearly 40 percent of the adult population is considered obese. In this population, efforts such as dieting and exercise programs have a limited ability to provide effective long-term weight loss and improvement of chronic disease related to obesity.
Obesity increases your risk of potentially life-threatening, weight-related diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. These diseases make normal daily activities difficult, and are expensive to treat and significantly decrease life expectancy. Weight loss surgery is the most effective method for helping people who have been unsuccessful at losing weight using diet and exercise alone.
Northwest Medical Center is excited to offer the Sleeve Gastrectomy, also referred to as gastric sleeve surgery, to weight loss patients in Tucson and Southern Arizona. By reducing the capacity of the stomach and the portion of the stomach that controls hunger, our patients have seen positive weight loss results from this procedure.
The intragastric balloon procedure is a non-invasive weight loss alternative to traditional surgical weight loss procedures and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is designed to help patients lose and maintain weight and is intended for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 to 40 who have not been able to lose weight with more conservative weight loss methods.
Bariatric surgery is effective for many patients, especially when patients follow the after-surgery plan. However, for some patients, the weight loss procedure may not provide the expected results. In these cases, Dr. Burpee or Dr. Chiasson may be able to help you by performing a bariatric revision.

Dr. Chiasson has been amazing to my father. My father has been suffering and untreated with achalasia for 20years. Over the past year it has gotten extremely worse. After numerous doctors that he seen, nobody could figure out what was wrong with him. Except for Dr. Chiasson, he found what was wrong and did surgery on my father two weeks ago and wow! His color has come back and he is so much happier. Today was his 2 week post op appointment and he was so excited that he got the clear to eat. Thank you Dr. Chiasson for being so kind and compassionate.

I gave this gentleman one star a couple of months ago because I had so much trouble getting in to see him. But today I finally got to and he’s amazing! His staff is extremely friendly and he knows what he’s talking about. He has given me and my family hope that I did not have before! I think God for this
