Many turn to family and friends for support. This, however, is sometimes not enough. A trained therapist can help to better understand inner turmoil, develop an insight or awareness of thoughts and feelings, and help us make real changes in our lives. Making the decision to begin therapy can be difficult and it may be intimidating.

Additionally, choosing the right therapist can sometimes feel overwhelming. Our therapists are here to answer your questions and make this process as easy and comfortable as possible. A trained professional can often assist with getting through various difficult life phases, transitions, and struggles.

I obtained my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from an American Psychological Association approved program at Argosy University/Phoenix in 2007. I am licensed as a psychologist in Virginia and Illinois and I have worked with a wide variety of clients in both psychiatric hospitals and private practice therapeutic settings.
People are sometimes confused or mystified by the idea of therapy, or they may have a misconception or misunderstanding of what therapy involves. Therapy (sometimes also referred to as "counseling" or "psychotherapy") should not be a mystery. In the most simple terms, therapy is a personal learning process focused on meeting your goals for self-improvement.
Although we all know that change is constant and inevitable, adjusting to new or changing life phases or transitions can be quite difficult and may evoke feelings such as fear, doubt, or uncertainty. Transitions force us to make changes in our lives, and often when people are asked to make changes, they respond with resistance.
Perinatal and postpartum depression and anxiety are depressive and anxiety symptoms that are experienced during pregnancy and following childbirth. These are very common conditions and ones that can leave a new mom or a mom-to-be feeling extremely confused. A common hype about pregnancy is that the new mother or mother-to-be should be "glowing" or overjoyed about becoming a mom or being pregnant.
While it is understandable that people typically want to know about the cost of therapy right up front, our therapists encourage people to not let the cost of therapy be the deciding factor when choosing the right therapist. Dr. Schechter is currently paneled and considered to be an in-network provider with Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO plans (including Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO).
