A solar "whiz" suckered me into installing an Outback charge controller. It is finicky as can be. Since I am not digitally inclined, whenever it konks out, I hire an electrician or my friends take a stab at re-programming the dang thing. Since my mountain cabin is 75 miles from the middle of nowhere, this is often a lengthy process. I use a generator to pump water, so I always charge an AUTOZONE battery pack when pumping water so that I will have back up to charge phones, etc. In previous years with the old solar system my electrical supply was pretty reliable. Purchased several of their FlexMax charge controllers, Mate2 (and Mate3) devices, and an overpriced 10-port hub. Their products are mediocre at best - and definitely not worth the hassle of having to return MULTIPLE units (and losing data in the process) due to product failure, their apparent lack of QA/QC process, and general inability to provide a bare minimum of customer service.

I've left messages requesting tech-support assistance (they don't return the calls) and when I do get through to tech-support they are utterly useless. The secretary/operator is the nicest, most helpful one
