The American Association for Social Psychiatry (AASP) is an organization of psychiatrists interested in how social factors and psychological well-being interact, and dedicated to education and advocacy about issues in social psychiatry.

This broad field encompasses increasing violence in our society and the world; the forced migrations of millions and the social trauma resulting from immigration issues; prejudice, genocide, war, and the pursuit of peace; intolerance of religious, racial, gender and cultural differences; the many effects of early childhood poverty and poverty cycles; the crisis in substance use; our relation to our planet, climate, and health; juvenile justice and prison conditions; health and economic disparities-and more.

The Abraham L. Halpern Humanitarian Award is bestowed by the American Association for Social Psychiatry for extraordinary achievement in advancing human rights. While accomplishments specific to the promotion of improved mental health and justice are especially of interest to the Award Committee, the ideal recipient has championed causes of importance directly or even indirectly to the best practice of psychiatric medicine.
The World Association of Social Psychiatry (WASP) is an international collaborative group which has an aim "to promote greater understanding of the interactions between individuals and their physical and human environment (including their society and culture), and the impact of these interactions on the clinical expression and treatment of mental and behavioral problems and disorders and their prevention."
Most of the AASP membership are members and fellows of the American Psychiatric Association, a member society of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA). Over 200,000 psychiatrists from 120 countries belong to the WPA, which has a broad educational mission in mental health and the care for the mentally ill.
