After much deliberation and research our program has recently [2019] adopted the Ontario Early Learning Frameworks which provide a whole child approach to Learning to guide our curricular decisions. First, because of its emphasis on play and its integration of family culture. Second, all learning pathways are represented including art, science, physical, numeracy, and social development.
A whole child or holistic approach includes families and community. It sees the humanity in each individual. Lastly, woven with other tools used, these models provide a much-needed view of a child's right to not only the best education but the best childhood. This raises the bar within our systems to think differently about how we intend to support the potential of all children.

RATIO: 7 children to 1 teacher. Our school has a low teacher to child ratio to better support the naturally active and inquiring child. CURRICULUM: Curriculum does not come from a box or pre-packaged from an outside source. To create relevant learning experiences, we must hold children with deep regard and concern for their health and well-being.
Roots & Wings Community Preschool recognizes the uniqueness of each child and their own individual approach to learning. Each child arrives at our school with different abilities, family and cultural backgrounds, and interests that are considered when planning curriculum. Our curriculum, which is a plan for learning, engages the whole child; Body, Heart, and Mind, and proceeds from the developmental abilities and needs of young children.
An inquiry based/whole child approach to education and learning is based on current knowledge of how children develop, think and learn, the primary focus being on the process of learning versus concentrating solely on rote instruction and recall of facts.

The intention of the Photo-Journal is to inform parents and future teachers of the journey of a particular child while attending Roots & Wings Community Preschool, but most importantly, to be a memory for the child whose life this document represents. The documentation system is the result of continued research and reflection regarding child development, how children learn, and age-appropriateness.
