Within this tiny country is an entire world of natural and cultural wonders with infinite opportunities for adventure and discovery. Just half a mile offshore is the world's second largest barrier reef, part of the largest reef system in the western hemisphere.
Just a 15-minute flight on Tropic Air from Belize City, Ambergris Caye is the largest of the offshore cayes and the most popular destination in Belize. The charming town of San Pedro is the bustling center of the community. Originally a Maya trading post, San Pedro boasts a variety of restaurants, bars and shops with a vibrant mix of cultural influences.
The southeastern coastal frontier is one of the loveliest areas of Belize, offering miles of pristine palm-studded beach framed by the majestic Maya Mountains and the emerald citrus plantations of the Stann Creek Valley. In the foothills lies the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, this hemisphere's only protected area for the mighty jaguar and home to numerous species of birds and animals.
Occupying most of Belize's western border with Guatemala, the districts of Cayo and Orange Walk are rich in biodiversity, archeology and culture. The region was once the heart of the Maya civilization with more than 1,400 recorded sites, many of which are still hidden within the lush growth of the rainforest.
Belize is hot and humid year round with high temperatures ranging from mid-70's F in January to mid 90's in August. Cooling Caribbean breezes bring respite from the sub-tropical climate. Winter lows rarely drop below 60. The wet season extends from June through September, with annual rainfall heavier in the south.
