Mike End Deli Birmingham
Mile End Deli started with a mission: to continue the legacy of our grandmothers' cooking and introduce Montreal-style cuisine to New York. We opened the first Mile End, our tiny Brooklyn restaurant, in 2010 with a goal of sharing the classic Jewish comfort food of our childhood and introducing new type of cuisine.

In 2019, we headed South to open an outpost in Birmingham Alabama. Using our grandmothers' time-honored recipes as the foundation for our menu, we updated traditional dishes and focused on fresh ingredients and from-scratch cooking techniques. The restaurant is a combination of a Jewish delicatessen and a Canadian-style restaurant, modeled after delis found in Montreal's famous Mile End neighborhood.

I love deli's so was excited to try this place. I did not like the smoked meat sandwich. There was a lot of fat in my sandwich and the meat was too thick for my taste but others love it so it depends on your preference. We also got the Eli Reuben which I liked better. I took the thick fatty meat out (that was also in the smoked meat sandwich) and enjoyed the rest of it. Next time I'll just get a Reuben. The poutine was good, the salad was good (the dressing was amazing!), the sour pickle had a strange flavor so I wouldn't get that again. We got the cinnamon babka which wasn&apos

I hesitate to give negative reviews but after paying $11+ (tip) for a chicken noodle soup with one thumbnail sized chicken piece, hardly any noodle and the broth tasted old, I just want to let others know. Also, I thought this delicatessen would definitely have great soups given price and location. They’ve got to work on their food just tasting better. Broth smells of beef bone broth and no simmering at all. Additionally, waited outside in the cold while I had to ask for them to just give me the soup cold bc no one was in the kitchen. Further, I ordered two soups of which the person taking my

Quite good Jewish Montreal fare (a lot of which is similar to NY Jewish fare). Definitely a great neighborhood staple.

Latkes: thick, flavorful, good.
Kugel: non-traditional as it's cheesey, but tastes good.
Chocolate babka: Hard, served cold so maybe I'd like it more warmed up? I asked if they could warm it, told no.

One of my favorite spots, and for good reason. Everything is homemade and delicious. Even down to the pickles. And they make the best carrot cake I’ve ever had in my life. 100% worth all of the praise they get.

This has become our go to neighborhood spot. A weekend fav is the hash and on weekdays the market salad. The service is great, the food is solid. Can't go wrong!

I went here for the first time after passing by a few times. If you're not looking for it, you may miss it. It's tucked near the corner betwen some other businesses.
I had the Smoked Meats Sandwich with, Montreal style beef brisket with mustard on rye. The meat is thick cut with a mild smokey taste. It's something I would buy again. I would just ask for the mustard on the side

So good! I'm partial to the Smoked Meat Hash, but have enjoyed everything I've tried. Fortunate to live just a couple blocks away and it's my go to spot.

Full disclosure: Every lunch and dinner item I’ve had here is phenomenal, but the bagels are lackluster. All in all though, Mile End still easily warrants 5 stars for its truly awesome sandwiches, cool and convenient location, and fairly reasonable prices. They market themselves as a Canadian restaurant. True. Jewish influence. Also true. Standard sandwich shop is true too. All that really matters though is that the lunch and dinner food is really really really good.

Cute and cool. No indoor seating right now with very limited outdoor seating in the sun. Food was good but a little underwhelming from the hype I read. And a bit pricey too. Not good value. Would like to try again with indoor seating and to try other dishes.

Incredible reuben, although I brought it back to my hotel and by that time the bread had steamed up a bunch. But that’s on me. Use their outdoor seating if you can! Good service although maybe a bit slow for 5pm.

Brisket and egg is the best breakfast sandwich. Once my husband and I found this gem in our neighborhood, it is the only place we would order breakfast. If we are feeling lazy. For lunch or dinner the corned beef is a great choice or the rubbie brisket is a nice one , looking for something a little fresher / lighter. The fries are something I always get because once you start you can not stop. I would say they are consistent in the food as well.

4 stars for their Smoked Meat Sandwich [$16]. Menu says their smoked meat is Montreal style cured and they have two sizes - regular for $16 & large for $21. Regular is actually big enough for two. I don't eat beef but my family enjoyed it so much. They said the brisket was tender and flavorful.

3 stars for their Smoked Salmon Bagel [$12] in which they named it Beauty. It came with cream cheese, tomatoes, red onions and capers. No doubt the ingredients were fresh but the price is just too high and I don't think it justifies the price tag. Take your money somewhere else for bagel

My girlfriend and I ordered some smoked meat poutine to take home after a day in Brooklyn. I had never had poutine before so I was not sure what to expect - maybe just some fries and gravy and what not topped with meat. What's not to love, right?

My expectations were blown away though - I can see why people rave about Mile End's poutine. A perfect balance of gravy and cheese, topped with the awesome smokiness of the meat. Pricing is also reasonable at around $12 as well. Do not make the mistake we made and split an order, get your own!

Sigh. I typically don't do this. I do understand the world is in a pandemic. Things are not the same. The world is not the same. The mental stability of most, and all people has been compromised. With this being said, I was looking forward to this spot and have heard such great things about the Mile End.

The Yelp reviews were on point for the most part so i thought I was in safe hands with my money. I ordered the chopped cheese, the Ruben, the matzo ball soup, and the classic poutine-- all to-go because there is no indoor dining there.

Here's the breakdown:

Ruben = meh. Small bread

Authentic Jewish fare. We ordered in for the holidays - the cucumber salad, cole slaw, and latkes. Everything seemed highly traditional - each dish delivered in what was expected. For those who want the Jewish traditional dishes, this is the place for you. If you are looking for a bit more flavor or a twist/unique update to these dishes, you may want to go elsewhere. Perfect if you want to fulfill your latke craving.

This business's policy is to make customers eat the cost of their screw-ups.

I'm a frontline worker staying in a hotel near this deli and was sick in bed after receiving my second vax dose. Ordered soup and latkes from this place, and they delivered the wrong order (nothing I could remotely keep down as I buffered fever, chills, and nausea). When I called they confirmed that the order in their system was the same as the receipt I was emailed but that "someone must have just pressed the wrong button" on their end.

But they wouldn't do anything to set the order right,

Came here because I was craving a good sandwich, and I'd heard good things. We ordered at their walk-up window and waited for... A long while. But it was totally worth it. The reuben and matzoh ball soup were super flavorful and warm, and the poutine was about as close to perfect as anything can be.

I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

We went there very busy Saturday at 1 pm so there are many people waiting for the seats, but the receptionist was really nice to navigate us how many minutes we needed to wait so we could walk around to see the street fair that was happening on the main street close to Mile End. When we came back, we still could not have seats and we asked her when the table would be open several times but she never made an annoying face not became rude but nicely and quickly organized the waiting list. Finally we got a small table but it's understandable as the restaurant size. The food was excellent, very fresh

Came here for the smoked brisket poutine. After having read about this place and did some research, it seemed to be worth a trip, and it was.

Great value for the portion given. Fries topped with cheese curds, chunks of Montreal smoked meat, and delicious gravy. My only minor issue is some of the meat had large pieces of fat. It was still chewable and soft but one strip was just fat.

Otherwise delicious and worth it!

We walked by this spot and despite having dinner reservations in two hours, we had a significant mid-afternoon snack here. Maybe it was the welcoming brick exterior, or the Canadian menu (my partner is Canadian), but we found we had to try Mile End.

THE WAIT: None on a Friday around 4pm. We had our choice of seats and sat at the counter so we could watch the chef work.

THE COST: $29.40 before tips, for a bagel and poutine.

THE SERVICE: Friendly, casual. Food came out quickly as well.

MUST-HAVES: Beauty (lox bagel)! Poutine was good for the US - curds weren't all melted, fries got a little

Loved everything we ordered. the brisket sandwich was a bomb and the latkes were perfectly fried. They made their chocolate babka but it is slightly overpriced in my opinion.
Overall it was a great dining experience where the food was simply delicious and the ambience was chill and cozy.
