Anxiety on its own is a common feeling of uneasiness, distress, or fear. We all experience anxiety at some point in our lives. Substance abuse has become a major public health problem in our country. Compulsive and habitual use of drugs and/or alcohol can become problematic for a person of any age and may lead to drug or alcohol dependence. Such difficulties often co-occur with other psychiatric problems. They typically adversely affect self-esteem, and undermine relationships, school performance, and occupational functioning.
Many resources are available to a person experiencing emotional distress. The support of friends and family, clergy, personal reading, healthy exercise, research, and independent coping - all of these are extremely valuable to someone who is suffering from any form of psychiatric disorder or pain. For those that do not find remission through these resources, professional therapy is available.
