Dr. Philip Chanin, Clinical Psychologist
My name is Dr. Phil Chanin, and I am a licensed and board certified clinical psychologist who provides psychotherapy to adults, couples, and groups in Nashville, TN. Thank you for your interest in my practice. As a Buddhist psychotherapist in Nashville TN, I have seen a rise in Buddhist psychology in the last several decades as a novel approach to clinical practice of mental health.

Mindfulness and meditation are two examples a Buddhist psychotherapist will use to help people deal with a variety of mental health conditions. My techniques can easily be applied as assignments and applied to real-world applications for people in therapy, making them especially useful therapeutic tools.

I graduated from Nashville's West End High School, where I had the great good fortune to play basketball for the late Joe Shapiro, who taught me so much about reaching one's potential, in life and in sports. Subsequently, I received a Bachelor's Degree from Amherst College and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
In my 40 years of practice as a psychotherapist, it has been an honor and a privilege to work with so many patients on their paths of exploration, personal growth, and healing. While many individuals come to me with clinical issues, others have sought my assistance to improve their quality of life and sense of well-being.
The "Internal Boundary": An Effective Strategy for not Taking what my Partner Says Personally. Couples Therapy Informed by the Work of Harville Hendrix, Terrence Real, John Gottman, Ellyn Bader, David Schnarch, and Esther Perel. My work in couples therapy and marriage counseling utilizes the theory and practices of Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT), developed by Harville Hendrix.
Group therapy has been shown to have many benefits, and to be as beneficial, or in some cases more beneficial, than individual therapy. We live our lives in groups. Our first group experience occurs in our families, and most of us participate in various types of groups our whole lives, be they familial, social, academic, or professional.
It can be difficult not only to call a therapist for the first time, but also to imagine coming to the office and beginning a psychotherapeutic relationship. I hope the following information will make your first visit feel more comfortable. I will then call you and ask you to elaborate a bit about your concerns and also whether you have any initial questions for me.

I have known Phil Chanin for the last 10 years and feel fortunate to have met him when I first moved to Nashville. He was quick to help me connect with other therapists in the area - something he surely did not have to do. I will be forever grateful for his kindness and generosity in this way, and I know of many other professionals in the area who he has assisted similarly. Among the qualities I admire about Phil are his commitment to lifelong learning and personal growth, his depth of knowledge about psychology, and his sense of compassion for others.

I was first interested in working with Dr. Chanin after reading about his approach to psychotherapy and incorporation of Buddhist Psychology into his practice. After knowing him for a few years now, I can honestly say he comes highly recommended by both me and my husband. I’ve attended group with Dr. Chanin, individual counseling, as well as couples counseling. I sense that he cares deeply about his clients, and that he continues to think about them even after they leave his office. His knowledge is evident from years of practice in the field, and I admire the active stance he takes on continuing

Dr. Chanin was a thoughtful and encouraging supervisor to me as I worked toward licensure and started my private therapy practice in Nashville. I worked with him in individual, couples, and group therapy settings and benefited greatly from his expertise. I know him to be a patient and insightful therapist, committed to listening deeply and non-judgmentally, and able to be assertive when necessary. He is well connected in the community and often provides referrals to additional resources that might benefit his clients.

I began seeing Dr. Chanin when I was going through a series of personal losses, and he worked with me over a two-year period. He's an amazing listener and did a wonderful job of putting me at ease. I always felt safe in his care and was able to better understand and work through the issues we discussed. I've recommended him to several people who were facing challenges in their lives and will continue to do so.

I think I was his first patient when he moved to Nashville when I was 12 in 1992 or something like that. I had a lot of issues and family issues. If it wasn’t for him I would not be in my 19th year in the Air Force. I am 39 now and will never forget him. I have a college degree and looking forward to retiring from the AF and Moving back to Nashville. Amazing human being.
