Located on the banks of Lake Champlain, just a few miles away from Burlington, Vermont, Brown Ledge Camp is a residential, sleep-away camp for girls ages 10-17. For over ninety years, Brown Ledge has created a place where girls can find their passion through our Freedom Program and the choice of 18 different activities.
Sailing, windsurfing, swimming, diving, waterskiing, wakeboarding, kayaking and canoeing operate simultaneously within the sight of the waterfront director. The open bay offers appropriate wind and space to the sailor, while our cove and island provide necessary protection for the other activities.

It is likely that you are here because you are exploring camps for your daughter, and this may be only one of many internet stops in your journey. Since I have only a few short paragraphs, I'll focus on, "what are the most important things to tell you about Brown Ledge Camp?" First, we are guided by a unique philosophy.
Brown Ledge is a non-profit camp that exists to develop community, self-discipline, responsibility and achievement in girls and young women, through self-directed participation in varied activities in a high quality summer program.
In 1926, Harry and Marjorie Brown developed the Freedom of Choice philosophy for Brown Ledge not because the girls of their time were over-scheduled, but because they knew that girls of "camper age" are able to make good choices; that girls know what they like to do and, if given the freedom to make their own choices, will choose well.

Brown Ledge Camp was established in 1926 by Harry and Marjorie Brown and run by the couple for its first 30 years. In the early 1960s, their daughter, Barbara Winslow, took on the role and served as the camp's Director for the next 23 years. During that time, Barbara recognized the need to institute a mechanism for the perpetuation of Brown Ledge.
Brown Ledge is located on Malletts Bay, the largest bay on Lake Champlain, just eight miles north of Burlington, Vermont. Lake Champlain is the largest lake in New England, and the sixth largest in the United States. With fifteen hundred feet of lake frontage, and a combination of fields, and woods, Brown Ledge's property creates an outstanding summer camp environment.
The Brown Ledge Magazine is an annual publication with feature articles and columns, guest author pieces by alumni and parents, a bulletin board of news from Brown Ledgers around the world, and a review of giving and the work of the Brown Ledge Foundation. Prior to 2014 when we launched our first issue of the Brown Ledge Magazine, the bi-annual Alumnae Ledger newsletter was our primary publication.

I went to BLC as a child in the late 70s and early 80s — I now find myself posting a glowing review 40 years later, why? Because Brown Ledge is a remarkable camp. Kids choose their activities, they lead their experience by carving their own path. I learned to waterski, horseback riding, archery, jewelry making, and theatre! A true JOY

My daughter just returned from her third summer at Brown Ledge. She absolutely loves camp and the second family she has developed there. From the Directors on down BLC is filled with supportive staff and campers. The rustic charm and simplicity is a treasure in this day and age. Letting the camper choose what activities they wish to focus on in any given day is pure genius.

Brown Ledge Camp taught me to set goals and reach them, and to recover and adjust when I fell short. I wouldn't be the person I am today without my ten summers there. Most importantly, BLC introduced me the most supportive, funny, kind and smart people I could hope to meet. I am endlessly grateful to have gone to BLC!
