JAY MARKEL, founder and lead designer, has a four-decades career in art and landscape design. Jay began as a sculptor, and after years of building extensive small-scale models of monumental pieces, he discovered that landscape architecture was the natural outgrowth of this work. In Jay's words, Landscape architecture expresses sculpture as an enveloping space.
Already an established artist, Jay embarked on a five-year working apprenticeship with Zen Buddhist monk Martin Mosco, of Marpa and Associates, and feels grateful for the opportunities and teachings he received there. Jay's sculpture can be found in several noteworthy collections both in the United States and in France.

At Viriditas, of Boulder, Colorado and Columbia, SC, our mission is to design and build world-class artisan luxury gardens. We combine old-world craftsmanship with innovative construction techniques and modern materials. We take existing landscaping-or the blank canvas of new construction space-and create unique gardens that reflect the desires and personality of each owner.
Many of our clients first contact us without knowing exactly what it is they want from their garden space. So we begin by listening to what you want. We visit the site and talk some more about the space and how you envision using it, your likes and dislikes, as well as basics such as timeframe and budget.
Le Jardin de Mon Coeur is a mountain estate garden that brings striking views into the home. Custom-designed construction is invisible to the eye but heightens the dramatic impact of the luxury garden. Zaria's Realm is a stunning garden sanctuary created on top of bedrock. Unique architectural features create a natural flow, extending the living space out into the garden, pool and extensive family play area.
My art - expressed in bronze castings, steel fabrications, a proprietary system of ferro-cement garden sculptures, custom luxury gardens, photography and film - has been a lifelong search for the same evolving expression. The sculptures shown here represent a very small selection from the last twenty years of my four decades of commitment to connecting people with the unseen forces.
