Our friends and family have helped us build a unique straw bale constructed winery. Tucked away between a 100-year-old barn, shelter belt, and grape vines, this winery, its farm setting and surroundings may remind you of a simpler time. Imagine a winery in South Dakota, made of strawbales.
The remarkable insulating properties of strawbales means we are able to reduce the energy needs of the winery and recreate the controlled environment of the cellars and caves that have always played an important part in the maturation of great wine. This innovative building material marries our commitment to environmental sustainability and production of fine wine.

Services
Don and Susie South, along with family and friends, started planting grapes in 2000. Susie having a horticulture background and Don having an entrepreneur spirit planted over 500 the first year. More would follow. After waiting 3 years for a mature wine grape crop, the wine was pretty good, and friends thought they should continue their combined passion, so in 2004 they applied and received the license for Strawbale Winery.
Our wines are all produced, fermented, bottled and blended here at our green winery in our straw insulated buildings. The grape wines are made from cold-climate grape varietals like Frontenac, Kay Gray, Frontenac Gris, La Crescent, and Valiant. We grow some and we buy others from local vineyards, keeping our produce to market mileage low.

What a great experience it was to visit Strawbale winery. I didn't know that there were any vineyards in South Dakota until we found it on yelp. The tasting room was very rustic and made with all sustainable materials. The staff at the winery also gets a big 5 stars. They were all very friendly, helpful, and knowledgable about the wines that they produce as well as the locally produced products that they had in their tasting room. This is agritourism at its best.

Try the wine slush! Oh ya, you heard that right; they mix their wine w/ a drink mix, unassuming greatness. Priced well, a wine tasting of 5 plus the glass for $5. Also, depending on what u try, you get food items (a chocolate, cookie, etc...) or a cold try, then it served hot. They offer dry, semi-sweet, sweet and a port type varieties. Most of the bottles were around $14, together with the tasting it's less than $20. Our pourer was great too, she used to be a school teacher, and her love of teaching continues here with slightly tipsy adults. Good grounds to relax on after--country solitude

One of my favorite wineries I've had the pleasure of going to across the country. Really friendly atmosphere where you can sit down, chat with the owners and sample various wines. When I was there the owner let us try some homemade jalapeno chocolate(yum!). Speaking of which I highly recommend the jalapeno wine!
