At first the business was operated out of a gas station and repair shop he rented with life-long business partner Steven Fellers.
As time went on, Steve and Ben would part ways when it came to the oil company, but would team up on other energy conservation oriented companies including insulation and energy-efficient window manufacturing firms. The oil business grew, and in 1968 Ben built the current home of Surner Heating across the street from its initial location.

In reviewing this past season's heating oil prices and comparing it to the chart below, it appears we are feeling the effects of OPEC's attempts to curb the glut of oil. We are still not in the same range as we were 5 years ago, but if the OPEC and their supporters succeed, we could see prices as high as 4-5 years ago.
