Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. Although it is common, accurate information about acne can be scarce. This can make it difficult to get clearer skin. The information on this site can help you understand acne and how to successfully treat it. Myths about acne are as common as the skin problem.
Actinic keratoses (AKs): AKs form on skin that soaks up lots of sun over the years. An AK, also called a solar keratosis, forms when the skin is badly damaged by ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or indoor tanning. Most people who are prone to AKs get more than one. When you have more than one AK, you have actinic keratoses, or AKs.
Dry skin is more common in individuals with a history of eczema, atopic dermatitis, allergies, or asthma. Medications including topical corticosteroids and oral antihistamines can help ease itching. Several home remedies, such as decreasing bathing frequency and lubricating the skin with thick moisturizers after showers, can help control and prevent dry skin.
Alopecia areata: This disease causes hair loss and often occurs in otherwise healthy people. Alopecia (al-oh-PEE-shah) means hair loss. When a person has a medical condition called alopecia areata (ar-ee-AH-tah), the hair falls out in round patches. The hair can fall out on the scalp and elsewhere on the body.
