BEWARE!!!! We rented a sailboat in August 2021 to take a 5 day trip to Catalina island from Long Beach. When we arrived at the location address we found the marina to be in shambles. The docks were old and falling apart. It seemed very unsafe to even walk along the rickety wooden paths to the boat.
There wasn't anyone around to greet us or even guide us to the slip of the boat we rented, but we managed to find someone from another company who told us where we would find the boat. We found the slip with a very old sailboat parked in it. This boat that we paid over $4000 to rent was disgusting,

We reserved the 31' Catalina for my birthday celebration. We were going to sail to Catalina and back in a 24 hour rental.
On arrival, the boat is not new, the nav system was inoperable, as was the tach, the ship to shore was erratic and the list could go on. We decided to do a sail around the harbor and return it all in about 3 hours. The boat sailed fine...so if you just want to sail, the boat was fine.
We anticipated a much newer boat with everything that was on the boat operational. I complained to the GM and they were quite fair in the cost reduction of our rental.
It is nice to see managers

So I want to start by saying that I'm brand new to sailing. I got certified here a few months ago. The best part of this has been the help from Andy on the docks. He's always friendly helps us pick the best boat and offers pointers before we leave. Last week my friend and I had the experience of a very low tide... yikes you guessed it beached before we were out of the harbor! Andy came out and helped us checked on us and brought us in. Being new at anything is stressful but with awesome people to walk you through it that's all the difference. I know there are lots of boating choices

Ok, is the docks a mess? yes. BUT having been a member of blue pacific, marina sailing and harbor lite, I kinda like harborlight the most. The booking is very convenient. everyone who works there are really cool and easy to talk to (unlike marina sailing in long beach). they are very accommodating. my only complaint is the day rates are a bit high the 3 day catalina deal is great. there's no hidden charges that you find with many rental places. in the end how much time do you spend on the docks anyways?

I will never use this business again. Terrible company. No maintenance of boats. Major failures underway. Not responsive. Deflect and avoid dealing with you when you have problems caused by them. Straight up lie to you saying boat is in full working order then you find out the truth. Reporting to BBB and authorities. Demanding my money back from my credit card company because HIYC manager won't help or return communication. I am warning you not to have to do the same. This was the 3rd time I have been on a boat with major failures from them, 2 of them I was the charterer, 1 other a friend

Attitude of the sailing instructor was terrible. Instruction was weak and vague while on the sailboat. Vocal instruction was confusing, the intructor mumbled and did not project his voice. Wasted time and money

I have been a member for years and have always had a very positive sailing experience. Most economical way to sail without the headaches of ownership.
Young man working on the dock was very helpful and 22' was in great shape. Had a great sail last Friday.

Not A Good Value! This is a 3rd class charter boat with the price of a 2nd class charter. A grad total of $4,574 for an older Lagoon 38 (5 Day) Catalina Getaway from 7/9/20 to 7/14/20.
With a heavy heart I have to say that our Lagoon 38 was in general poor conditions and the delivery was delayed due to missing equipment.

Good things;
1. We always make the best of the situation and have a great time.
2. The engines worked well
3. Water heater worked well
4. Fresh water system worked well
5. Electric winches worked well

No so good things;
1. Boat general cleanness at delivery was poor.
2. Several

What an amazing experience! the club is great - the equipment and facilities are awesome. the dock hands were really helpful. special mention to Chris - he really knows these boats. the price is the best in probably the US. and of course- Captain Frank Dixon - is a very thorough instructor- and i could not have asked for a better teacher.
all i can say about any negative reviews is this - people should use a checklist and checkout boats thoroughly before acceptance and departure and there would be no complaints because issues are immediately addressed when found.
i look forward to many more

I just got certified here for the US Sailing 101 class. I was able to use a Groupon and saved a lot on the class. My instructor Ray was incredibly qualified, knowledgeable and kind. The boats are rentals so they are maintained and clean but nothing fancy. There is lots of time on the water sailing and some classroom time. We had 4 students to a boat. The written test is 80 questions and it's hard. You won't pass it if you don't study the book that you should pickup and read before your first day. It was a great class with a great instructor. Highly recommend it.

My home away from home. Became a member this year and loving the experience of chartering sailboats at both the San Diego location and the Long Beach location. Great way to sail without the hassles of boat ownership. So many great SoCal sailing destinations. US Sailing certification courses are great as well.

Been using their sailing ships for nearly two decades and have always found their facilities to be great. I actually learned to sail there back in the early 1990s. My most recent trip the boat was sparkling clean and full of fuel. Sailed on a 22' Catalina. The 22' boats are a little older, but very safe and easy to sail. There were staff on the pier (Harbor Island) to help us select a boat from the dozen or more they have and helped us get under way. It was an epic day on the bay in San Diego .. even saw a huge pod of dolphins just outside the bay before sunset!

Marina has had better days. Look at all the garbage floating around. Many docks decapitated. A lot of boats also in poor condition. Place looks like a graveyard!

I have been a member since 2000 and have been very satisfied with the club. I sail the bigger boats that require a more seasoned skipper.

Needless to say the bigger boats don't get the abuse that the smaller ones do from less experienced skippers, and are in much better shape.

With that said, the smaller boats are great as well.

Great economical way to get on the bay.

The two-star rating here is about the condition of the boat. The office staff was quick to answer questions and the dock staff was very helpful. The problem was the boat, specifically the condition. I rented the Lagoon 380 catamaran named "In The Shelter," out of the Long Beach facility, from October 1 to October 8, 2016, and spent the week at Catalina Island. The pictures on the website do not give you a true representation of the condition of the catamaran. Many things were inoperable or broken on "In The Shelter" and the batteries were in a very poor state! We spent a great

We have been chartering with the HIYC for years. I crew and am not at the helm. The staff are always friendly and we can usually get a boat quickly. I give them 4 stars because sometimes the boats are not rigged correctly and some are worse for wear and tear. We usually take out a 32 to 36 Catalina or Hunter. Be sure to bring all supplies for the cabin (plastic cups, bottle opener, ice, paper towels, paper plates, utensils, etc.) Enjoy the bay!
